Question about 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

I'm having problems with my 97 jetta gls 2.0. It had been driving trouble free with all gears accesible. After parking the car for 15 minutes and restarting it, I had a hell of a time shifting into any gear without wrestling with the stick. There's a lot of clunking involved in all gears. Seemingly the car felt like it was in gear when I depressed the clutch. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Its possible your clutch cable got stretched out. if you are lucky, your car came with an adjustable cable stock, and the slack can be picked up, it not, the cables arent too expensive, and with a little work, you could install it yourself. but its not the most fun job.

have your friend sit in the car and push the clutch pedal, and measure how far the little arm connected to the tranny (that will move up and down when the clutch pedal is pushed and let out). it should move almost an inch at least.(generally) some cars if the clutch is worn enough dont require it to move quite as far.

could be the tie rod ends or another steering component related to that. I know that it is definitely a steering issue.

97 VW Jetta GLS, manual transmission. The speedometer stopped working & the fuel gauge is jumping around.

Hi Ken You seem to have two faults with your vehicle. One will be a speed sensor and the other possibly a bad connection. Take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and pin point the problems (which the scan will do) and then sort them out. Regards John

no recals but if you are the oreginal owner you have untill 2010or 80,000 miles before the warranty runs out, and if you are past that I bleive you will need a T.C.M transmission control module.

you should start by checking your brake saftey switch. you have to apply the brake when shifting from park if it is bad it will not allow you to shifft from park.try the cheapest easiest first.
