I think your mechanic is talking about a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). Are you having trouble with your gauges, speedometer, or shifting points, etc...?

We have looked everywhere for the crankshaft

It will be bolted to the transmission close to where the transmission bolts to the engine. The sensor is not bolted to the engine. If you have the new part you should be able to compare and find the old part fairly easily.

Transmission codes for aaccord ex 1991

Code 8 is for the crank or cam sensor circuit, and code 12 is for the EGR system.
You may need to get a used shop manual to have the testing procedures for the codes. The codes only tell the mechanic what to test.

I cant find the dip stick for the auto transmission. I looked everywhere. Just dont know. I never owned a VW before, and bought a 96 Jetta gls auto. Help please....

it is my understanding that you have to take it to vw dealer or a vw mechanic and have them check or change tranny fluids. not positive bout it but that is what i was told. daughter just got a jetta turbo and that is what we were told by a friend of hers that has one.

Don't just spend money like that, no good mechanic can tell you the exact problem by the sound of it..If this is a 97 model then have diagnosed by a computer..If you don't get any error codes then it will cost you more..You can never tell it may be your air mass meter or oxygen sensor playing up..That is the cheapest approach to solving problems in modern cars..

Should i buy a 1991 Cadillac brougham

Yeah...go drive, reverse, drive reverse, without coming to a complete stop, but not at 30 mph either, if anything feels like its slipping or it kicks or something weird, then no buy...engine problem is easier to cope with than transmission problems, generally. You did say it's an automatic? Going rate is about $2200 on this car though...unless you really want/need it go up to $3000 MAXIMUM...don't tell him that though...tell him that you want the car at this price, and if I don't get it, I'll walk away...make sure to point out to him all imperfections you notice everywhere on the car...look behind, under the tires, run a magnet to make sure all stock paneling, you know...eveything you're supposed to do when buying a car. Every guy wants to get rid of the car at a fair price than hang on to it for a while overpriced.
