Question about 1994 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

Our key stopped opening the driver's side door of our Toyota Corolla about two days ago. The key was able to be inserted into the lock, but would not turn. Since entrance to the vehicle was still possible through the passenger side door, we saw this as an inconvenience, but not a major problem. Yesterday, the key stopped working in the ignition. Same thing - the key can be inserted, but not turned. We have tried the spare key as well with the same result. Both keys open the passenger side door & the back trunk, but will not turn in the driver's side door & ignition! Any information would be extremely appreciated... we are poor students living overseas, and simply cannot afford to pay a mechanic to have all the locks changed!

Ok, we just tried the oil, and no luck. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

We had a locksmith come out and he fixed the problem for a grand total of $40. Whew!!

Put light-weight oil on the key to lubricate the lock cylinder tumblers. ... Use cooking oil if nothing else available. Put the oil on the key and work the lock.
Wipe the keys when the locks start working.
The locks use "graphite" for lubrication. You can grind up pencil lead and use as a lock lubricant .... messy.

Two days ago my 2004 toyota corolla s starting honking a little bit when I turn the key as well as the doors are automatically locking and unlocking when I turn the key on and off...

Check your remote to see that it isn't setting off the alarm. If the battery is dying on the remote, this could happen. If not, have alarm checked.

The remote to unlock the doors won't work. replaced battery. the key will not unlock driver or passenger door or the trunk

I hope you're able to get into your car because it sounds like the system needs to be reprogrammed.

1-insert and remove key from ignition two times

2-close and open driver door two times

3-insert and remove key once from ign.

4-close and open drvr door twice

5-insert key into ign.,then close driver door

6-turn key to on (not start) then off, twice this is rewrite mode, have all remotes to reprogram it will clear any lost remotes.

7-remove key from ignition, the door locks should cycle twice.if not start over.it may take a few tries.

8-press lock/unlock together and hold for a second

9-release,and press lock on remote, the door locks will cycle confirming program.continue to do other remotes you have, steps 8 and 9.if only one in possession, you are done. To end mode open door or insert key into ignition.

You'll need to follow the steps with no more than a 1-2 second delay between each step.. hope it works

driver door open-others closed
driver door unlocked

1-insert and remove key from ignition two times

2-close and open driver door two times

3-insert and remove key once from ign.

4-close and open drvr door twice

5-insert key into ign.,then close driver door

6-turn key to on (not start) then off, twice
this is rewrite mode, have all remotes to reprogram
it will clear any lost remotes.

7-remove key from ignition, the door locks should cycle twice.if not start over.it may take a few tries.

8-press lock/unlock together and hold for a second

9-release,and press lock on remote, the door locks will cycle confirming program.continue to do other remotes you have, steps 8 and 9.if only one in possesion, you are done.

to end mode open door or insert key into ig.you can do up to 4 remotes.read this a couple of times to get the sequence down.there are time restraints, but if you go in order it will work.do not wait more than a second b/t each step and you will be ok.i know from experience that you can do this as fast as you can and it will enter mode.if steps out of order or you wait to long it wont.print this and have in lap, read ahead of what you are doing.good luck

You'll need to replace the solenoid (motor) that doesn't work. Not hard once you get the door panel off. I suggest you buy the correct part, not a universal one.

1999 Toyota Camry door lock and unlock issues

I believe this was done as a safety feature. It stops a potential car hyjacker from sneaking in the passenger door when you open the driver door. I know recent Hyundai models are set up such that if you turn the key in the driver's door once it only unlocks the driver's door. If you turn it twice in quick succession it unlocks all of the doors. Maybe the Camry is set up the same way.
