My husband phoned a mechanic and was told to drill out the ignition with varying sizes of bits until he had made a large enough hole to get to the switch inside. So for now he has to start the car with a long handled screwdriver - but he can get a new ignition to replace it.

Could be a problem with the cable to the shifter. The shifter is supposed to be in park to lock the ignition switch and remove the key.
Could also be something jammed in the lock cylinder.

Glove compartment will not open

glove compartments usually have a key to lock them. use your spare key or your ignition key to try and unlock it. if this is not the case something must be jamming it. try to open it without forcing it. maybe something jammed it shut.

i would inquire at a dealer about whether or not the lock cylinder is covered under warranty. my first and last repair method is a bit of graphite on the key and in the lock cylinder, if that does not work then a new lock cylinder is in order. these inevitably have their last moment at night, in adverse weather, a million miles from home. at that time you will rue the decision to not spend a couple hundred to get it fixed correctly. an ounce of prevention

I have a 91 honda accord and something may be wrong with the ignition switch. When I put the key in the key won't move either way like the switch is jammed

Yeah, over time and use, the ignition key switch can jam or break. Take your car into a repair shop or dealership. They will diagnose and determine the problem, and help you decide the steps to take to fix your problem. I strongly recommend going to a dealership for most repairs and services, simply because they will fix your problem, take care of your car, and if they break something, they'll take full responsibility instead of pointing fingers until you say f#*& it!

the tumblers have worn out and not engaeing properly. Repair consists of removeing the ignition switch assembly and installiing a new one. Since it has jammed, mostly a tumbler or two may have broken off in the cylinder houseing also.

Hi Jamie,
As you turn the key, **** the steering wheel hard side-to-side. The anti-theft interlock between the ignition switch and the steering is just jammed. Happens to all cars from time-to-time, and that's the fix.

Ignition locked

The most common reason you can't turn the key is because the vehicle is not in park. It may seem that you are but if something has gotten in the way, like say a breath mint, it won't make contact with the sensor. I had that happen once and didn't know something was jammed in there until I kicked the transmission shifter back and forth several times really quickly and it popped out. Don't be too violent with it though.
Hope that helps!
