Fuses (located on a swing down unit near the steering column or in the
glove box) protect all the major electrical systems in the car. In case
of an electrical overload, the fuse melts, breaking the circuit and
stopping the flow of electricity.
I suggest check your 1994-Oldsmobile-Eighty-Eight-Owners-Manual for descriptions (page 223 and next).
