Question about 1988 Pontiac LeMans

1 Answer

Engine jerks and hesitates while driving but picks up again

The car had been setting for about two months without starting. Initial problem; When trying to start, the engine would crank over well, but would not start or fire at all. Also engine service light was on. Battery ran down when trying to crank. Used battery pack to to boost battery and after starting and dying a couple times the engine started and ran fine. Started and stopped engine several times. Engine service light remained on. After letting the engine run for about ten minutes it was shut off. After waiting about 5 minutes the engine would not start again or fire at all. Tried again to start several times even boosting the cars battery with battery pack boost thinking the cars battery was not providing enough power. Engine would not start again. Towed the car to a auto shop for repair.
Repair shop diagnostic report says:
Not getting spark, No tach siginal, Could not communicate with scanner.
They recommend:
Replace pickup coil.
Replace Ignition module
May need further diagnoses??
Cel on
Manually retrieved codes.
Flashing code 12.
Repair shop rebuilt the distributor. Engine will now start and run but when driving the engine appears to loose either spark or fuel and jerks a half a dozen times for just micro seconds, and appears to stall for just micro seconds again, and then picks up and runs fairly smooth again for awhile before repeating same again. Engine service light remains on.
Where do we go from here????
Thank you,
Larry Legg

I would recommend that you replace the ignition control module, if that has been done already u need to check for grounds be corroded or the connector to the distributor being defective.

After driving at 35 to 45 per mile for 15 to 20 miles the car hesitating, jerking and stop it will start again by permiting it to sit a few minutes

Sounds like a gas tank full of crud. Check gas filter to see if it is dirty. Also water in gas will clog gas tank filter then when car stops water will disburse and collect when engine starts again.

Pt cruiser jerks when acclerating, hesitates when not accelerating, fine when idle

I am not saying this is the solution or this is the problem but the PT cruiser suffer from code P0344 Which is the cam position sensor which causes misfire, the solution is a reflash of the ECM.But before a reflash the Camshaft postion sensor needs to be verified for working condition and if possible duplicated.Once the Check Engine light does come on you automatically go to limp home mode, This is the drag that you experience, the purpose is to protect the catalytic,in case there was a true condition with intermittent cam postion sensor,You need the check engine light code, then you can go from there.
