2003 Honda Odyssey that will not come out Park

I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey that will not come out of Park some of the time (without the use of the shift lock release on top of the steering column). I noticed that when I press the brake down, most of the time I hear a click (shift lock release I guess), however, some of the time when I press the brake down I do not hear the click and it will not come out of park. This isn't a transmission problem is it? Also, I read elsewhere that the fix was a new brake switch at Autozone (part # JA4411), would this actually be the fix?

Yes most likely, the brake switch also sends power to a solenoid to unlock the shift lever. If the trans works fine once you get it out of park, the trans itself is fine

I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey with 20K miles. Some external belts are cracked and the dealership is recommending changing the timing belt, water pump, etc. Thoughts.

2003 ?? then yes its advisable to change the lot regardles of mileage ,the water pump iam not so sure about its just that its driven by the timing belt and if it goes wrong and leaks its big job to change ,but if vehicle has had antifreeze in it from new then i wouldnt bother ,yes i would wiggle the drive shaft whilst belt is off and if no play then leave it alone but you know the dealers ,someone has to pay the suited and booted sales staff with their gelled up hair and the secretarys make up and new clothes

The engine rpm's increase and decrease when in

Does your van have the V-Tec engine? If it does, you will have to take it to a dealer to get it fixed. What is happening is one or more of the solenoids under the valve cover is malfunctioning. The result is the surge in rpm's and the rough transition. You could try an indy mechanic but any mech worth his salt will tell you to take it to the dealer.
