Question about 1997 Toyota Tacoma

How do you change the spark plugs in a 2004 Toyota Tacoma with a 3.4 V6. The driver side has plugs with the wires leading to the other side?s plugs (passenger) that has a "coil box or something? over each plug. What is the easiest way to get the box off and then the plug out? Also on the driver side does the spark plug wire cap just pop off? It looks like a flat cap with the wire leading out. No need to turn? I have changed any plugs but never seen a box over the a plug. Any suggestions?

Remove the spark plugs and wires one at a time to avoid confusion and incorrect wiring during installation.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and if the vehicle has been run recently, allow the engine to thoroughly cool.
  2. On engines equipped with spark plugs, carefully twist the spark plug wire boot to loosen it, then pull upward and remove the boot from the plug. Be sure to pull on the boot and not on the wire, otherwise the connector located inside the boot may become separated.
  3. On engines with coil-over-plug ignition, remove the ignition coil for access to the spark plug. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Engine Electrical, Ignition Coil.
  4. Using compressed air, blow any water or debris from the spark plug well to assure that no harmful contaminants are allowed to enter the combustion chamber when the spark plug is removed. If compressed air is not available, use a rag or a brush to clean the area.
Remove the spark plugs when the engine is cold, if possible, to prevent damage to the threads. If removal of the plugs is difficult, apply a few drops of penetrating oil or silicone spray to the area around the base of the plug, and allow it a few minutes to work.
  1. Using a spark plug socket that is equipped with a rubber insert to properly hold the plug, turn the spark plug counterclockwise to loosen and remove the spark plug from the bore.
WARNING It is recommended that you NOT use a flexible extension on the socket. Use of a flexible extension may allow a shear force to be applied to the plug. A shear force could break the plug off in the cylinder head, leading to costly and frustrating repairs.
To install:
  1. Inspect the spark plug boot for tears or damage. If a damaged boot is found, the spark plug wire must be replaced.
  2. Using a wire feeler gauge, check and adjust the spark plug gap. When using a gauge, the proper size should pass between the electrodes with a slight drag. The next larger size should not be able to pass while the next smaller size should pass freely.
  3. Carefully thread the plug into the bore by hand. If resistance is felt before the plug is almost completely threaded, back the plug out and begin threading again. In small to reach areas, an old spark plug wire and boot or a short length of rubber hose, placed on the spark plug, could be used as a threading tool. The boot will hold the plug while you twist the end of the wire and the wire is supple enough to twist before it would allow the plug to cross-thread.
WARNING Do NOT use the spark plug socket to thread the plugs. Always carefully thread the plug by hand or using an old plug wire to prevent the possibility of cross-threading and damaging the cylinder head bore. Remember, your truck has aluminum cylinder heads and the spark plug threads in the head are easily damaged.
  1. Carefully tighten the spark plug. If the plug you are installing is equipped with a crush washer, seat the plug, then tighten about 1 / 4 turn to crush the washer. If you are installing a tapered seat plug, tighten the plug to 1115 ft. lbs. (1520 Nm).
  2. If equipped with coil-over-plug ignition, install the ignition coil assembly(ies).
  3. If equipped with spark plugs, apply a small amount of silicone dielectric compound to the end of the spark plug lead or inside the spark plug boot to prevent sticking, then install the boot to the spark plug and push until it clicks into place. The click may be felt or heard, then gently pull back on the boot to assure proper contact.

Those boxes you speak of are ignition coils. Each one feeds two cylinders, that is why they put the coil directly over the plugs on one side so that only one wire is needed for every 2 cylinders.
The spark plug wire is removed from the plug by firmly grasping the flat cap, and twisting while pulling on it, and it should pop off without a great deal of effort. If the metal clip tears out from within the spark plug boot, you will need to replace the wires.
The ignition coils will likely be held on with a couple of 10mm bolts.
You will need a 14mm spark-plug socket, and a ratchet & extension to remove the plugs. When re-installing the new plugs, coat the threads very lightly with a dab of anti-seize lubricant. Thread the plugs in by hand using the socket and extension, and then tighten snugly, but don't overdo it because the cylinder head is aluminum and you will strip the damn thing out! Hope this helps.

It depends on which engine is in the vehicle. The 2004 Sonata came with two possible powertrains -- the 2.4 Lit L4, and the 2.7 Lit V6.

On the 4 cylinder engine, there are two coil packs and two ignition wires, Below each coil pack is a spark plug (#2 and #4 cylinders). The wire from # 2 coil pack goes to #3 spark plug, and the wire from #4 coil pack goes to #1 spark plug.

Now the 2.7 Lit V6 requires you remove the surge tank (intake manifold) in order to access the spark plugs & wires on Bank 1 (Right Hand side of the engine).

Chang spark plugs on 2005 toyota tacoma


V6 I assume... Easy job but you need a long 12" socket extension. Disconnect them on top, reach down inside with the socket and extension, only one was dificult and required a bracket to be moved. Its about a 45 minute job. Don't be suiprised when you find that there are 2 brands on plugs in your truck, thats how the factory did it. Denso on one side, NGK on the other. Best replacement, go to your dealer and buy 6 new NGKs, they're less that $3 each.

Changing the spark plugs is a pretty easy task. The spark plugs run along both sides of the engine, 1 per cylinder. (3 on each side) You can easily identify them by the plug wires running to them from the distributor. Pop off each plug wire, (1 at a time) and replace the spark plug. Once you have replaced the plug, replace the plug wire. This ensures that you dont mess up the sequence of the wires which determines which cylinder fires at what time in the cycle. VERY important not to mess up the sequence. If you should happen to get the wires mixed up, look online for the firing sequence for your vehicle and engine.

How do I get access to the spark plugs in my 2002 Toyota Tacoma? There is a air flow tube over two of the spark plugs and I can't figure out how to remove it.


Replacing 2002 Tacoma PlugsIf you're talking about a 6 cylinder, then it's fairly straightforward. The driver side has normal-looking plug wires, the passenger side has the ignition coils covering the plugs. In either case, remove and label the wires from the plug side, unscrew and remove the ignition coils from the other side. Using a spark plug socket (this is important, the rubber ring in the socket will hold on to the plug, which is deep inside the head) unscrew the plug, make sure the new plugs are gapped and replace them. It is wise to use some rubber hose to start the new plugs so you don't cross thread. Then replace the plugs and ignition coils.
It's probably worth replacing the plug wires at the same time.

On the V6 engine The drivers side plugs are easy although the passenger side will require you to remove the intake boot and the coil packs, easily done with a 10 mm socket and ratchet. Disconect the coil pack connectors by depressing the plastic clip and pulling them off one by one on the three coil packs . leave the plug wires attached and pull the coil pack straight up and off the spark plug.Blow out the area around the plug with compressed air to prevent debris from entering engine when the plugs are removed. Use a 5/8 spark plug socket and a 8 inch extension bar on your 3/8 ratchet at remove the plugs. use anti seize on the new plugs, gap the plugs to manufacturer specs and install your new plugs 2. If its a 4 cyl engine its actually a bit more difficult. The intake boot assembly has a bracket that bolts to the valve cover and side of the engine and you must remove it to access the 4 coil packs on top of the engine. once again the coil pack wires must be disconected and the coil packs un bolted and removed from the valve cover to access the plugs. Blow all dirt from around plug with compressed air to prevent foreign objects or dirt from entering the engine when you remove the spark plug , once again use a 3/8 ratchet and an extension with your 5/8 spark plug socket and remove plugs, use a small amount of anti seize compound on the threads of the nes plugs and gap them to manufacturer specs before installation. Also while the coil packs are off,, Inspect them for ARC Tracing a white residue and line may form on the coil pack Tip/boot if you see alot of ARC tracing Id suggest replacing that coil pack. Especially if you have a misfire condition.

Any trouble light? Sounds like it might be misfiring during acceleration which is more related to ignition quality than timing. Check the spark plugs--if badly worn, replace them. Might need new spark plug wiring. Check the air cleaner. Replace the O2 sensor if the truck has a lot of miles. Look for loose or cracked vacuum hoses.

the spark plugs are under the coil pack which is bolted on with one bolt on top of the valve covers with one wire plug going in to it there should be 3 on one side

You need a special tool when they are stuck on, it's like a long pair of neddle noise plyers with sides that grabs the wire by the boot evenly, but twist them loose from the plug as you pull the rubber actuaully melts itself to the plug sometimes
