Question about 1998 Audi A4

Not starting after changing head gaskets.ignition timing and hall sender sensors coming up as faults on scan tool.no spark and injection. if you put the key on fuel pump works and stops as normal.checked the sensors, both reading from 900 to 1000 something ohms. v6 a4 1998 model

Sounds like timing belt is not lined up.

in usa this engine is L34 or U20SED
i guess you are working with no scan tool????
that be super hard, to out guess the EFI system.
we cant see electrons so.. tools make the man.
DOHC engine
if there is no spark times 4, did you check all 4?
After all 1 cylinder or all 4 can fail. telling the
mechanic big clues
if sparks ok test fuel works (sprayed).
is the timing belt under 60,000 miles new?
if the belt slips compression x4 drops radically.

head off, well i think this is an interference engine.
its DOHC, so if you bent the valves by driving until the belt slipped, oops, you killled the head.

funny thing is no history here
am I to guess, engine died? and the head was removed
was the head tested, when off?
new head, rebuilt head,
check for warp
and do the valve test with I use kerosene
in the combustion chamber to see if the valves are not bent, if bent the fluid leaks to the ports.
oldest test on earth this, 100 years. old.
and more, take it to a machine shop (head)
and get it pressure tested, etc>> now that be savvy.

Where is crank shaft sensor located

There are many Vitara engines, what size is yours.?
the noid lamp will not work VR crank sensors.
and many Halls will fail that test too, (a 10,000 ohm pull up stops that)
the noid suck big time current. (if your NOID is LED, then yes it works on most HALL sensors and never VR type.
the VR type has only 2 wire. the Hall has 3 or 4 wire (power)
the G16 motor uses hall sensors and creates a nice square wave. any DSO can see that signal.

why not say why you suspect this sensor.
and the car still starts with a Dead CKP on this G16 motor.!
The CKP only makes "ECU misfire work, detection"
the 1995 had no such sensor. and runs.
if the car will not start, then its not the CKP it\'s the CMP sensor
(dead spark) (no spark? the ECU cuts all FUEL)
the cam or DISSY sensor inside it is CMP.
this CMP dead, causes NO Spark , no start and No fuel.

the crank CKP sensor on some suz, are not hall but just a VR coil
and you need scope or other very special tool (mag) to test it.
on all 1999 here, our Scan tools tells you which is bad.
no scan tool? P0340, 355, cranking or running.

I post this to show that , it\'s best to post simptoms first
then ask how to find out why.

98 golf 2.0 barely starts,then only idles really rough for a little bit then stalls.,if you give it throttle there is zero response, I replaced throttle body already and distributor ( hall sender) ?.?


You may need a factory scan tool to readapt the throttle. when ever the vehicle looses power or the throttle is diconnected adaptation may be necessary.

Have an 88 dodge 1/2 ton van 3.9L V6 makes a popping sound when driving. already done the head gaskets and the timing. Also replaced the spark plugs.


I'am guessing you don't have the distributor set correctly

Under the rotor there is a plate

Under the plate is a Hall Effect Sensor for injector timing,
not ignition timing

Move the distributor & you have problems

MORE LIKELY NEED A DRB SCAN TOOL TO RELEARN CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR BECAUSE CMP SENSOR IS IN THE CYLINDER HEAD.ANY TIME CMP DISCONNECTED.YOU HAVE TO RELEARN CMP POSITION SENSOR TO THE PCM.CODE SCAN A SEE WHAT FAULT CODE YOU ARE GETTING.

Installed new head gasket, new timing belt, two new valves. drove 5 miles engine stalled. no spark or injector pulse. installed new crank sensor, cam sensor, coilpack, new ECM still wont start


It soundslike your timing belt may have a problem. It may have failed prematurely, thetensioner may have failed, the tensioner pulley or idler pulley may have wornout, or the timing may be incorrectly set. No spark can usually be guaranteed acrank sensor fault, cam sensor fault, or timing fault. If the timing checksout, maybe you got a bad crank sensor or cam sensor, but I am 98% sure it'srelated to timing.

This may be caused by no crankshaft position reference .If you have a scan tool watch to see if you have a crank signal...if yes Its possibly due to a faulty Ignition module this controls injector firing and spark firing...Note the crankshaft position sensor is a hall effect sensor and can be checked with a voltmeter on the lowest setting on ac also they were common for hitting the reluctor wheel on the backside of the crankshaft vibration dampener causing the circut to go open..also allignment is critical on the sensor and the sensors usually end up being siezed when adjusment is required....hope this helps and good luck

Checking the fault codes


Yes.  Next to the ash tray there is a black slide off plate that reveals the OBD I plug.  {1996 and newer can be read with an OBD II reader (read for free at Advance auto or Auto Zone)}  Once you reveal this plug on the 1995, you can plug in a single jumper wire (or even a paper clip) in the #4 and #15 pin hole.  There are two rows of pin holes, count from the upper right to the #4, then on to #15 (which will be the second to last pin hole).  Turn the ignition switch on (motor not running), insert the jumper wire for about 3 to 5 seconds, then remove the wire.  The ENGINE LIGHT will flash a hold, then the code, which will go something like this, flash, flash, PAUSE, flash, flash, PAUSE, flash, PAUSE, flash, flash, flash, flash.  Then it will repeat the codes if you just sit there and observe it.  The code in my example would be a 2214 code.
