Look at the brake pads and see if they are worn down or not if they are get them replaced or the brake rotor could have gotten hot and warped which also can cause it to squeak when u try to stop

The loud grinding noise may be due to worn pads or brake shoes. I suggest you have all brakes on the vehicle inspected for worn pads, shoes, and possibly worn rotors. The ABS light may indicate uneven brake functioning, so for safty sake, have the brake system checked out.

Have to ask as I'm curious

I have never had a brake problem in 50
years working on brakes personally & in
the repair shop business I once owned

Even if it is not brake related, what are your plans
to finding a solution & have you actually been in the
physical service bay & talked to the techs that have worked on it?

Have you gone for a ride with them & far enough to duplicate
the noise?

As odd as it seems, I didn't take in any work, until I road tested
with the customer driving, then we switched & went back to the shop

Doesn't it seem odd dealer service folks aside, that no one after
several visits has a clue, how do you justify that, are they trying to
get you to go away for their own sanity?

It sounds as it is a loud & predictable noise so unless your not
up to the cost of taking it apart,I know I could find it,but no way
I can guess from the internet without our road trip & a vehicle
to work on & test.

Every time i put on my breaks, there is a really loud popping sound. really loud. i have a 2001 sunfire. help me please.

Hi Megan,

I appreciate you adding me to your list of contacts and asking me to help you with your problem.

However, I don't know if I can be much help from here. Noises can be very difficult to diagnose when you actually have the vehicle in front of you. All I can tell you for sure is that the noise you are hearing is not normal and if it happens only when you apply the brakes, then it is most definately brake-related. I have had some vehicles making noised as you described because of broken brake hardware. I have had some with similar customer complaints that have had loose or missing caliper mounting pins. Then I have had some that the problem was not the brakes at all, but rather lower control arm bushings that were coming apart and applying the brake was making the entire front suspension shift and make a loud popping noise.
My professional advice is to take it by a professional auto repair shop and have one of the technicians drive the vehicle. They may be able to give you some idea of what is going on just by hearing and/or "feeling" the noise themseves. Then again, they may tell you that the wheels need to be removed for a full brake and suspension inspection before they can tell you anything.

I wish I had a more "cut-and-dry" answer for you, but I am afraid that is pretty much impossible at this point.

Good luck,

Dave (dttech)

Driving down the street normal speed. the wheels lock..when the released it was making a loud noise

I would definitely have the brakes checked out by a brake specialist to see what is the matter. Loud noises on release are never good. The locking up the brakes should not occur mechanically or in conjunction with the AntiLock Braking system.

Check for codes in the ABS braking system, as well.
