SOURCE: I have a vacuum leak in 2001 nothstar engine

Depends on where the leak is if its a hose easy. If its the intake gaskets, difficult. First have to find the leak. A can of carb spray works great for this. Spray around suspected areas. Engine will change idle speed when you find the leak.

How do I fix black smoke problems from exhaust

Sounds like there is something wrong with the fuel injection on your vehicle making it burn to rich (probably one of the senors). The problems you describe sound typically like a car that's burning to rich. To help you understand a car mixes flue and oxygen and then ignites it. The mixture has to be different deepening on how cold or hot the weather is (it is the fuel injection's job to sort this). If it goes wrong and there is to much much flue and not enough oxygen the flue will not ignite very well. It will cause the problems you said. Other common issues with a engine running to rich is rough idoling, stalling all the time and being hard to start. This issue is known as flooding.

What is Pc171 Code

It's P0171 & P0174 not Pc 171 & Pc174 ! The engine computer has detected a lean condition ! That mean's it's not getting enough fuel or has a vacuum leak , bad O2 sensor ! fuel pump getting weak . fuel pressure regulator weak !
P0171 - System to Lean (Bank 1) The Adaptive Fuel Strategy continuously monitors fuel delivery hardware. The test fails when the adaptive fuel tables reach a rich calibrated limit. Refer to Section 1 , Powertrain Control Software, Fuel Trim for more information. Air Measurement System
  • MAF sensor (contaminated, damaged, malfunctioning, etc.)
Fuel System
  • Fuel pressure regulator (leaking, malfunctioning, etc.).
  • Fuel filter plugged, dirty.
  • Fuel pump (weak, check valve leaking, etc.).
  • Leaking/contaminated fuel injectors.
  • Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel.
  • EVAP canister purge valve leaking (when canister is "clean").
  • Fuel supply line restricted.
  • Fuel rail pressure sensor (incorrect reading).
Air Induction System
  • Air leaks after the MAF.
  • Vacuum Leaks.
  • PCV system (leak, valve stuck open, etc.)
  • Improperly seated engine oil dipstick.
Exhaust System
  • Exhaust leaks before or near the HO2Ss (exhaust manifold gasket, mating gaskets, etc.).
EGR System
  • EGR valve tube/gasket leak
  • EVR solenoid vacuum leak
Secondary Air Injection
  • Damaged/malfunctioning secondary air injection system (mechanically stuck valve).
  • P0174 - System to Lean (Bank 2) The Adaptive Fuel Strategy continuously monitors the fuel delivery hardware. The test fails when the adaptive fuel tables reach a rich calibrated limit. Refer to Section 1 , Powertrain Control Software, Fuel Trim for more information. See Possible Causes for DTC P0171. See Diagnostic Aides for DTC P0171
View Freeze Frame Data to determine operating conditions when DTC was set. Observe LONGFT1 and 2 PID(s). Refer to Section 2 , Adaptive Fuel DTCs Diagnostic Techniques for more information.

My 1984 cadillac eldorado is running too rich

Can't adjust anything-- it is fuel injected

May be able to adjust the TPS Sensor, but
I doubt that will be part of the lean codes
or whatever you have

May have to mail the injectors away to be cleaned
& flow tested

Have to check for OBD1 Codes, first

Have to check, test & possibly replace the oxygen sensor

Have to test the CTS -coolant temp sensor, to make sure it goes
into closed loop & you have control over the fuel delivery

Too lean-- is either a RICH condition being corrected by ecm
or a vacuum leak & thus lean condition

Many other items & reasons as well

You will need vehicle experience with OBD1 Systems
& an understanding of the DFI Fuel System on the caddy
to work on it.

You say running too rich, what testing told you that?
Too lean & being driven rich, so that are the codes you see !
Dirty worn out injectors-too rich
Fuel Pressure regulator failed-too rich

There is good video on rebuilding a throttle body on
You Tube Video, you can watch & see about pressure
regulators & injectors on your type system

Check every vacuum hose in the engine compartment FIRST
for vacuum leaks

Do not forget about worn out & partially blocked exhaust converters
& clogged gas filters, not related maybe, but still have to be working
properly

Running rich

Hi Justin
you seems that you have a good idea about engines and injection systems, lets say that the computer see's rich exhaust and pulls back fuel mixture. creating misfire. why the engine is misfiring on one cylinder only??
my advice to you
1 search for a vacuum leak corresponding to the misfiring cylinder, like a manifold gasket or injector seal.
2, do a compression test for all cylinders, probably you have a burnet valve.
Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Have 82 ford truck f150 runs for abut 5-15 mins than dies getin gas chang full pups two times same thant runs and die

Hmmm...maybe piston ring failure, valve seal failure, rich air/fuel mixture or maybe a head gasket (however that is normally white smoke due to coolant burning instead of oil). If it's so dark that it's almost blue then I can tell you that somehow oil is getting into the cylinder and burning alongside the air and fuel. Your best case scenario is that the engine is running rich (Rich:Too much fuel, Lean:Too much air) and the smoke is a dark grey to black color. CAUSES OF SMOKE

2004 vw caddy van. starts instantly cold. but cranks over for ages after stopping briefly. Also has loss of brake servo assistance occasionally after brief stop.

From what you say I would check the MAF and for any vacuum leak. Here is my reasoning. When cold the ECU sets long injection times to warm up and if the vacuum is low your fuel pressure relief valve will also be at higher pressure (reduced vacuum will not relieve the fuel pressure valve as it would normally). The result is the the extra fuel injected is balanced by the extra air due to the leak and the car starts easily. However when the engine is hot the ECU reduces injection times and the fuel mix is leaner. If the MAF is unable to read the mass of air flowing through it correctly it may set the injection to being too lean to run at idle and at restart. If there is a vacuum leak the additional air causes the engine to cut out and will like the MAF makes it difficult to restart. A quick way to check the diagnosis is, when the car next cuts out when hot, disconnect the coolant sensor before starting. This will fool the ECU into thinking the engine is cold and reset longer injection times and the car should restart that little bit easier. Reconnect the coolant sensor once the engine is running. Now switch off and try to restart with the MAF disconnected. the engine should restart if the MAF is at fault. Check that the MAF is clean and that its electrical connection is good. THe MAF can be cleaned by spraying it liberally internally with electrical spray cleaner and allowing to air dry before reassembling. Check the vacuum lines and junctions are secure. So what I have described here are two sides to the same coin. If the MAF 'sees' less air than there actually is the ECU will reduce the amount of fuel injected to 'compensate' and in the process makes the error of running the engine too lean. If there is a vacuum leak too much air actually enters the engine for the correct setting of the injectors and again the engine runs too lean. I hope this helps.

My 2000 nissan altima engine runs a few seconds when turned off!

It's called dieseling. Happens when your car is running too rich with fuel. Unburned vaporised fuel is left over in the system when you turn it off and it keeps burning until it's gone. Your fuel mixture needs to be leaner. It could be caused by a number of different things. Might be a vacuum leak, faulty oxygen sensor, problem with fuel injection system, etc. It needs a good mechanic with a diagnosis computer to isolate the problem.
