Most likely a misfire and it is comming on go to autozone or a parts store who can pull the codes it will give you an ideal of whats wrong. if it has 40,000 plus it is most likely the 02 sensor. Sometimes though you may have a spark plug going bad.

Engine knocking sporatic and now check engine light and constant knocking in my 07 Ford Focus automatic..HELP! Car is dead in driveway!

The first thing to do would be to check your oil. (low or contaminated oil is the most likely cause of engine knocking) Make sure it is full, clean and looks normal.
Next, check your engine coolant (Antifreeze). Make sure it is at the proper level and looks normal.
If either of these are not right, you need to find out why and correct the problem.

If the engine oil and coolant look OK, the next step is to scan your Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and retrieve the fault codes to find out why it has turned the Check Engine light on. There are about 200 reasons why the computer could possibly have turned the light on, so I can't tell you any more until I know what codes are present.

Check all the vacuum hoses and see if they are broken or disconnected. Surge in power issues, idling issues, engine stall while driving, all are related to vacuum hoses. Give a try.

Service Engine Soon

With no noticeable change in performance, chances are that the problem is a failing oxygen sensor - which will affect pollution output and possibly cause your car to fail its next safety inspection, and the tach failure indicates a possible cam sensor failure. The only way to tell for certain though is to have the car's computer scanned. Your mechanic can do this (for a price), and many parts stores will run a limited scan at no cost (in the hope of selling you something).

Mechanic says camshaft sensor needs replace; however the car runs fine. Check engine light comes on sporatically.

Agreed with thundergod - I had a failed cam sensor on my Audi A4 that made no discernable difference in the car's operation, but changing it and resetting the light fixed the problem.
