The transmission is a sealed unit and the system does not have a dip stick for the typical user to check. Check the floor/pavement beneath where you normally park the car each day, if you see an oil stains then the gaskets are probably leaking and need to be replaced. Expect to pay $1,100 to $1,500 at the dealer.

Check the fluid level in the tranny. If that is good try servicing the tranny with a new filter if that dosen't work I would think that the torque converter may be acting up.

You should have the control module checked by a tech as either their is too much slippage or it is interfering with the anti-lock system.

Have an OBII scan done. (fault scan) Your description can describe many things and a scan will narrow it down to the exact faults. It's easier & cheaper than throwing parts at it. Trust me, I used to work for BMW NA

1997 BMW 328i convertible automatic tranny slipping

to check oil start vehicle in park and let idle, open large allen bolt [normally 17mm] on g/box sump, oil should spill from aperture. if not top up until it does. this must be done at a temperature of less than 30 degrees celsius as oil expands at higher temperatures.

Possible transmission problems

It definitely sounds like the transmission. If you haven't had the transmission fluid and filter changed I would recommend having that done. I also recommend the Lucas transmission oil which will help alleviate (within reason) slipping issues.

Page 63. It seems as though you have your transmission in Manual Program. Normal driving should use Adaptive program.

Or, your transmission is slipping.
