Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Am

Battery dead, key stuck in ignition.

Just like the summarization describes, my battery was dead this morning and when I went to test it out, I couldn't get the key out of the ignition. It was in park.

This car hasn't had any problems like this before, and I took the longest break driving it in a while (three days). So am I to assume that these problems are connected and maybe by recharging the battery, I can get the key out?

I have had the same problem with my daughter's car. She inadvertnetly left the key in the on position and the battery went dead. Apparently an electrical current is neded to withdraw the key. I put a battery charger on the car for several hours and everything worked fine after that.

I suspect the two are not related. Try pulling the steering wheel hard to the left and at the same time moving the key. It sounds like the ignition is locked due to the position of the steering wheel when turned off.

Try turning the steering wheel. Sometimes when the wheel locks in one postition like it does with the key out it will prevent the key from coming out. So try turning it side to side and see if the key will come out. The battery may have a parasitic drain. something that uses power when the car is off but isn't supposed to. or a bad battery if it went dead in 3 days.

It could be a charging issue. But it could also be that something is draining the battery. To test the alternator you'll first have to charge the battery using a battery charger. Then follow this test.

If the alternator passes, then conduct a battery drain test with this procedure

Most likely a bad battery or battery terminal connection.

This can be due to a weak battery. The Antitheft can sometimes create starting problems by interferring with the starter. The Antitheft senses the Voltage drop as a theft attempt and reduces the starter Voltage in an attempt to keep you from starting the vehicle.

You can get a free test at Autozone, Oreilys, and Advance. Some will instal a battery free.

This morning tried to start my 03 sierra 1500, i opened the driver door cab lights came on, put key into the ignition turned the key and the lights went out and the truck would not even crank nothing....

Try jump starting it. I suspect your battery is dead. After time they don't hold a charge as deep as they once did. Have it load tested to verify. Your lights and other options don't draw nearly what your starter needs.

Jump starting the battery may be all you need. If this vehicle was not in park when the battery went dead and when you got in to start it it was dead. You then probably put it into park trying to start it.
But the issue at this time is if it was in neutral when the battery went dead the you changing the selector to park may not actually have placed the transmission in park. With electronic gear selection it actually need power to the system to place the transmission in park.
Without it really being in park the key may move to the lock position.
A bit of quess work here but I hope for you I hit the mark.

Key stuck in igntion.

Put the battery on charge or jump it. Basically it's locked in because of the lack of juice.
