Question about 2007 Ford Mustang GT California Special Convertible

2 Answers

My car will not start. With a jump from another battery it starts, and shows good charge on the battery meter. After it sits for a while, the battery is dead. Starter is ruled out. Can't decide if problem is battery or alternator. Are there any easy tests?

Take the car to an autoparts store and have them check the condition of the battery and the alternator output. Most parts stores will do this as a free service. That should help narrow down the possible cause or at least permit you to eliminate certain possibilities. Sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.

Jump start it ad take it down to an autoparts store and they can test both alternator and battery while they are still installed on the car. Most dont charge for this service.

Have the battery checked ! sounds like bad battery ! You can check the alternator by hooking up volt meter to battery , with vehicle running should see 13.1 to 14.8 volts if alternator is good ! How To Check Charging System EricTheCarGuy

BATTERY SHOWS 12.84 VOLTS BUT WONT START UNLESS JUMPED METER SHOWS 14.2VOLT WITH ENGINE RUNNING

Hi,
First thing to do is clean both battery connections.Fords are really bad for the battery connections corroding. When this happens you can get a good volt reading but not be getting enough amps. Next is to disconnect clean and reattach the electrical connections at the starter. Also check along the wires going from the battery to the starter to make sure the insulation has not been damaged. It is unlikely but possible that a critter or road debris damaged the insulation and caused one of the wires to corrode. The starter is the heaviest draw on the battery so physical damage to the electrical system will show up here first. If everything else checks out you will want to have the starter checked. If you are capable of removing it most major auto parts stores can bench test them.
Hope this is helpful to you. Good Luck!

How do i tell if i have a bad battery ?

check the voltage of the battery at the terminals with a digital volt meter it should be 12.6 volts. if not then charge the battery and let sit with the lights on for about 1 minute, then recheck voltage it should at least 12.6 volts. if not then the battery needs replacing. if you can jump start the car and if runs then check the charging voltage it should be around 14.5 volts if its higher or lower then the alternator may have a problem. if you have proper battery voltage on the first test then you will have to check voltage at the starter. the large wire should have battery voltage without starting and the small wire should have battery voltage only when trying to start the car. if these are good then check the ground for the starter it that is good then the starter is bad.

Hard to turn over like weak battery?????

Clean battery terminals. Then buy a cheap tester that plugs into cig lighter about 5 dollars The battery should be about 12.6 volts just sitting. Start car and meter should read 13.8 or above if not replace alternator if it reads good and the battery is charged up turn off car turn on headlight for 2 seconds turn off and read meter it should read 12.6 if not replace battery or have it tested for free at autoparts store. If they load test battery and say it is good and the charging system shows good then your starter is drawing to much power remove starter have it tested for free at auto parts store. If they say you need a rebuilt have them test it before you take it home

Can I hook a battery charger to the jump start posts on a 2002 Chrysler Sebring, or do I have to connect it directly to the battery?

It is best if you remove the battery and charge it on its own, do not place the battery directly on the ground, sit it on a plastic surface or wood, then charge it.
If its starting to drain quickly, its a sign that your alternator is not charging anymore, have it checked to be sure.
Good luck.

Bat good, alt good, starter good. will start when jumped and will stay running but when shut off it wont start again untill you njunp it off again.

Altenator good? Did you bother to check the diode in the altenator? If its blown it will not let the voltage regulator charge the battery. The only way to check this on the engine is to have it running. Take a volt meter and check the voltage while running. If 13.5 volts shows it may seem to be charging the battery right? Maybe not. That the probes from the volt meter and invert the probes from red to the negative battery terminal and the black probe and connect it to the positive terminal. While running if the same voltage shows the diode is bad. The diode prevents the current running in reverse. If running both ways no charge is getting to the battery

I still suspect the battery. Many battery tests that dont use a "load" test are inconclusive.

Won't hold a charge

its the battery. the battery holds the charge and the alternator charges it so when you jump the car it stays running because you alternator is providing power when you shut the car off you have a bad battery that isnt holding the charge needed to start it again.

I think your battery is weak, where as it doesn't have the cranking amps when you first go to start it. What i would recommend is doing a load test on the battery to tell for sure if it is good or not. If you have an advance auto or auto zone near by, they offer that service for free, and if need be they will install your new battery for you.
Good luck!
