Question about 1991 Chrysler New Yorker

1 Answer

Trans has a hard time shifting into final gear. It seams to serge 3X before shifting. Also fluid must be hot going through radiator because car started to run hotter since the problem started. I changed the filter and added Lucas but it didn't help. The fluid I drained seamed to be ok. (not burnt) car has 132000 miles. 4 speed automatic with 3.3 motor. Back in the day I would have guessed vacuum modulator, but I don't see any vacuum lines. What trans is in this car and what do you think it can be? Thank you in advance for your help

The final gear (or overdrive) I believe is electronically controlled, could be faulty, but I'm more inclined to say it could be the transmission pump or loose bands.

If you are always adding fluid, that means you have a leak somewhere. Put a piece of clean cardboard under suspect areas under car overnight to check for obvious leaks. The one hard leak to find is when the trans cooler in the radiator is leaking internally. Open your radiator cap (only when cool) and see if it looks oily inside. If so, you need to replace your radiator, and I suggest you flush your cooling system at the same time.

05-07 Nissan Pathfinder hard shifting and bad coolant

These pathfinders have a major common problem and there is no technical service bulletin. Does your pathfinder have a hard (jerking)1-2 gear shift? does it have a hard shift in any other gears, when downshifting, or comming to a stop? Is your coolant a grey cooler or is your trans fluid bad? check your coolant on top of the radiator (when its cold) or in the coolant reservoir. Check your transmission fluid with the trans dip stick (with engine on). <br /> <br /> What is happening is the trans fluid cooler (on the bottom of the radiator) and radiator are cracking and trans fluid and coolant fluid are mixing together. If you catch this problem very very early it might be possible to fix it with a simple flush coolant and tanns flush and new radiator. But in most cases it requires a new transmission and new radiator and major flushing. It will probably happen to all pathfinders for these years, just depends on when. go to the dealership for check ups and check your coolant fluid, trans fluid, and shifting often to diag it quickly.

97 town car not shifting from 1st to 2nd gear

Check the Coolant (antifreeze) level. My 94 continental has a hard time shifting from 2nd to 3rd when the level is low. Also, this may indicate that the transmission fluid is too old to work properly. The transmission fluid is cooled at the bottom of the radiator, since cool fluid works better than hot fluid (especially when the trans fluid is old) that could make the transmission not shift properly. Keep the coolant level up until you can have the trans fluid checked.

The truck exhaust the batery and the computer says it is the transmicion sensor p0705

theres 2speed sensors 1on the trans the other on the rear punkin, these sensors will cause your truck to shift hard, take along time to go in gear, serge while driving, run rough, these sensors also control your fuel ratio and timing, speedometer, and when the trans should shift

I have a 2000 metro the trans shifts hard when you first start up from 2nd to 3rd. But after that it seams not to shift down from 3rd no matter how many times you spot and go again.

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST.
Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS.
Thank you for using fixya and keep us posted.

Do you also have a check engine light on as well?
Go to an auto parts store like autozone where they'll plug it up to a scan tool for the trouble code for free.
How do the forward gears react?...shifts rough?...clunks through gears?...slips? (engine speeding up but forward travel isnt)

Start on level ground...engine cooled.
If low or missing trans. fluid...any leaks?
Check for trans. fluid in the radiator (not the recovery). The radiator is a cooling unit for the fluid and in some cases can rupture , pushing fluid into the radiator itself. Check especially up towards the radiator area where the trans. fluid lines go into the radiator.

Is the access door for the oil filter in place? It needs to be.(has to do with cooling, and area of greater/lesser air resistense)
How about the fluid...smell?...dirty?...gooey?

For trans fluid ,check trans fluid level with engine on, hot and running in park, on level ground.

You have a 4L60E M30 series transmission. Has certain components (valves-solenoids) in it that can keep transmissions from shifting properly should the fluid overheat or the pressure become too high/low.
The usual trouble code this displays is P1870.
Sometimes it is simply a TCC valve out of whack and can be replaced
