Question about 1996 Nissan Maxima

Smells rich in when starting it when it's cold.

Hi, I bought this car new in 1995 and it runs like a top. I use all Nissan parts and it has been maintained beyond whats expected. My problem is that when it is first started in the morning, it smells like it's burning rich. It's been doing this for the last 6 months. It has 150,000 on it. Is it worn injectors, or what is the prime suspect? Thanks for your time.

    Hi,

First, I'm aware Nissan can fix it. The exhaust has a rich smell, perhaps I mislead you. I'm not having a fuel smell problem. What I'm looking for are problems that come about from old parts. They work, but of course not as they did when new. Injectors, air flow meter, things of that nature. The mileage has no noticeable difference. It could be less than when it was new but I have noticed any huge difference. No oxygen sensor problems or at least the computer has not flagged it yet. How long, in mileage, are injectors good for and what are the symptoms of early wear. The air flow meter, can it be out of range and be a possible problem or is it either good or bad with no gray area? Can it be a weak fuel pump or is it either good or bad? The plugs only have about 30K on them and as I said before it starts right up? Are the coils at each plug either good or bad with no gray area? Are you a Nissan expert? I need some who know this engine and what happens to it's systems with higher mileage. Thanks for your help.

Check your fuel pressure regulator, then try a professional fuel injection cleaning where your fuel system is disabled and the engine will run soley off of the pressurized fuel injection cleaner itself, best way to get a very thorough injector cleaning, also you will want to clean the intake plenum as well... I am surprised that after 6 months of running rich you don't have a check engine lite on showing a fault code. O2 sensors usually go bad by now...

If there are worn injectors, you can see poor power acceleration and poor millage. There is a fuel leak or a problem with the evaporative emission system which is designed to trap these gas vapor so they can burn in the engine. First thing to look is the fuel rail and clamps if there is any. Second thing to look is fuel regulator with its connections. Third is to leave the rest for a shop to do the diagnostics. Any shop with a good mechanic understanding how the system works will be able to diagnose the fuel leak.

Why does my 1995 Nissan maxima shake after I turn it on and when I drive it and It sounds like a rumbling motorcycle noise and it smells like gas and transmission keeps slipping when changing gears

Sounds like two separate problems. The tranny is an issue all on its own. If the engine is running rough and smells like gas, that would indicate its running rich and/or having a misfire on one or more cylinders. I would check with ignition system first, spark plug, wires, coil.
