Yes, shouldn't be a problem. Remove the battery. Jack the car up 1-2 feet. You'll need to support the motor. Drain the transmission, there is a 17mm allen plug at the bottom of the housing. The filler plug is on the right end of the transmission, (17mm allen plug also) to the right of the throw out bearing housing plug, says VW on it. Remove the axleshafts. Unplug the back up switch. Remove the starter, that will also disconnect the motor/transmission mount. Disconnect the clutch cable and shifter linkage attached to the transmission. Remove the speedometer cable. Unbolt the rear transmission mount (17mm bolt going vertically down, a real long extension will help to get to that one) and bracket going to the end of the transmission at the top, 2, 17mm bolts with nuts. Remove the bracket. Remove the lower inspection sheild, 3, 11mm bolts. From the underneath side, on the other side of the motor where the transmission joins the motor, there is a 19mm bolt holding the transmission to the block, remove that, and also remove the small inpsection plate above there, 2, 10mm bolts. Unbolt the two top bellhousing bolts, and it's ready to remove, pull the transmission away from the motor 2-4 inches to clear the imput shaft from the clutch disc, you'll have to kind of turn and twist the transmission to get the transmission to clear the sub frame. Also moving the engine up or down will also help. The transmission weighs about 70 pounds.

A head gasket is a gasket that sits between the engine block and cylinder head in an internal combustion engine. Its purpose is to seal the cylinders. It will still start but it won't run that well and you will damage your engine if you run it with it blown. so check your head gasket again.

I HAVE A 86 740 INTERCOOLED WAGON AND THE TRANNY SHIFTS REALLY HARD FROM 1 TO 2 ALL THE TIME I AM MECHANIC JUST NOT TO MUCH ON VOLVO'S IS THIS SOMETHING I CAN FIX, ADJUST OR SOMETHING OR IS THE TRANNY...

hi chris, this is one of the first fuzzy logic auto boxes to be fitted to a european car, followed by vw(zf make them,as do borg warner)
try this, just to make yourself aware of whats happening, without touching the gas,put the car in drive and let it accelerate itself ,right upto top gear, stop, then using 1/3 pedal,do the same, stop, then floor it,you will feel the differances right away,(the car will try to make you drive more smoothly, saving gas).other than checking fluid level,
every 6k,the only fix,if needed, is a rebuild.
but,if you know why it baulks in 2nd,(big drop in revs, between 1st and 2nd),you will feel better.
this is not in any handbooks.
regards
geoff

What is causing the battery to drain while parked?

That can be super hard to track down, but have you tried listening to the car while it is parked? After the car has been off for 30 minutes or so listen for clicking relays, running motors, etc~also don't forget to check for hood light, trunk light etc that may be staying on, feel your fuse box(es)for warmth. If you can't find any of these problems check your battery to make sure it is holding charge and isn't the problem.
