Question about 1999 Pontiac Sunfire
I went to change the thermostat on sis inlaws car and when i removed what i think is the thermostat housing there was no thermo in there so i went to put one in there and i cant figure out how it is suppose to stay inthere it just falls in to the block i have recheck the numbers and i have the right one for the job is there sometype of lip in the block or how do i get it to stay put
Thermostat does not go there follow these directions .follow the hose and pipe underneath the engine, the pipe will turn upward to the thermostat cover. Raise the hood and remove three bolts and cover over the manifold. Look down through the manifold railings and you will see the thermostat housing. Use a number 8 socket and long extension and remove the two 8 mm. bolts connecting the pipe to the housing, The pipe will drop down, if you have removed the hose and bolt under the bottom of the engine. Move the pipe over so you can see the thermostat. Use a stiff wire, bent and stuck through top of thermostat, pull upward and remove thermostat.

Wrong thermostat, for sure. The package may have had the wrong product in the box. Take it back and compare to another boxed thermostat... Perhaps at a different store. The thermostat should be snug so that it can stop the flow of the coolant and regulate it when up to temp.
