Question about 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Had belt squeal, treated w/belt dressing now loud clicking

I was dealing with continual belt squeal so I tried spray on dressing, squeal is gone but as soon as engine warms theres a loud clacking instead, almost as if gummy belt might still be snapping/slipping at one of the smooth pulleys? It appears to be tight although Dont know where to measure "flex"-between which two points, and how much deflection should there be? The ONLY change was to add spray belt dressing and CLACKING is VERY loud, frightening...louder than squeal ever was. 2000 cherokee 4.0 (original owner) 115000 miles.

Stop!
One of your pulleys is seizing. Most likely the a/c compressor or the tensioner (idler pulley).

Use a helper.... turn OFF a/c and have someone start the car. Observe the pulleys and see if the center one quits turning or is the source of the noise.
If can't determine and no noise, turn ON A/C and observe.
You will find it, but stay out of the line-of-fire if the belt breaks... it will be slingshot out of the engine compartment!!

The deflection should not be more than 1/2 inch. You can check this by pulling on the belt. If you can pull it more than that it needs replaced. The squeal was coming from one of your pulleys, the most likely culprit is the idle pulley, second in line is the tension pulley, this would be a likely culprit of the clacking sound.

I just had my belts replaced on my 2004 Hyundai Elantra Sedan and it still squeals when i first start it up but goes away after i start driving. i added belt dressing spray and that helps but a week later...

check the tension. cheap belts will stretch. if after you retension them (especially the alternator belt) you may need to replace them with BANDO or OEM belts.

My 99 Chrysler Town & Country Van Belts are squealing. When I turn on the van it does it loud. And I just got the belts done a couple of months ago. Can you guys help

Try to spray some Anti-Squeal belt dressing on the belt and see if that helps, if not you must likely have a pulley or tensioner thats going bad.

There is a really load noise coming from the area of the air filter. I think there may be a bearing in the alternator gone bad. Does anyone know if this possible.

Most likely no, check to make sure that all of your pulleys are turning correctly with the belt. If the pulleys are all turning then the thing that is probably causing the noise is your belt. Go buy some "belt dressing" from an auto parts store and spray all over your serpentine belt. Sometimes your belt gets water on it and will squeal afterwards, the belt dressing helps correct this. Hope this works, let me know what happens and I will see if I can help more.

When accelerating our van it starts to squeal very loud now.

Have your fan and other belts checked/replaced!
Rarely but sometimes a can of belt dressing will stop the squeal if the belt's just a little to dry!
Check your oil!
Check your trans and other fluids if you don't think it's a belt!

Belts stretch from new. Try to tighten them again. Hopefully the are not glazed or this may stay with you.
