Sorry mate - the engineers at Eunos/Mazda were all midgets and they ALL hated bigger people! The seats are a bit cramped if you're a big bloke, no-one can get enough leg room or recline as much as they liked, the steering wheel isn't adjustable AND tall people sometimes wonder whether they should be looking over the top of the windscreen instead.

But it's all part of the fun.

How to ajust trottle linkage on transmission


Throttle valve cable adjustment:Place throttle body in idle position. Press cable lock button to release cable. Pull cable conduit toward rear of vehicle until wiper is completely retracted into end of conduit fitting. Release cable lock button. Raise vehicle for access to trans throttle valve lever. Instructions and diagram,to remove and replace rear drum brakes


1984 Ford Tempo - Rear Drum brake drum/shoes
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION


See Figures below instructions

1. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.

2. Remove the wheel, tire, hub and finally, the drum assembly.

3. Using a spring removal tool, remove the horizontal securing spring at the top first of the assembly.

4. Pull the adjuster locking plate away from the shoes.

5. Remove the lower horizontal securing spring.

6. Unfasten one of the 2 shoe hold-down springs and remove the pin.

7. Remove the brake adjuster.

8. Remove the remaining hold down spring and clip.

9. Lift the brake shoes assembly off the backing plate and wheel cylinder assembly. Be careful not to bend adjusting lever during the removal process.

10. Remove the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.

11. Remove the horseshoe retaining clip and spring washer and slide the lever off the parking brake lever pin on the trailing shoe.



To install:

12. Apply a light coating of high temperature grease at the points where the brake shoes contact the backing plate.

13. Apply a light coating of lubricant to the adjuster screw threads and the socket end of the adjusting screw. Turn the adjusting screw into the adjusting pivot nut to the limit of the threads and then back-off 1 / 2 turn.

14. Assemble the parking brake lever to the trailing shoe by installing the spring washer and a new horseshoe retaining clip. Crimp the clip until it retains the lever to the shoe securely.

15. Attach the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.

16. Attach the lower retracting spring to the leading and trailing shoe assemblies and install to backing plate. It will be necessary to stretch the retracting spring as the shoes are installed downward over the anchor plate to inside of shoe retaining plate.

17. Install the adjuster screw assembly between the leading shoe slot and the slot in the trailing shoe and parking brake lever. The adjuster socket end slot must fit into the trailing shoe and parking brake lever.



The adjuster socket blade is marked R or L for the right or left brake assemblies. The R or L adjuster blade must be installed with the letter R or L in the upright position, facing the wheel cylinder, on the correct side to ensure that the deeper of the 2 slots in the adjuster sockets fits into the parking brake lever.

18. Assemble the adjuster lever in the groove located in the parking brake lever pin and into the slot of the adjuster socket that fits into the trailing shoe web.

19. Attach the upper retracting spring to the leading shoe slot. Using a suitable spring tool, stretch the other end of the spring into the notch on the adjuster lever. If the adjuster lever does not contact the star wheel after installing the spring, it is possible that the adjuster socket is installed incorrectly.

20. Inspect your work to make sure it is correct.

21. Install the hub/drum and wheel/tire assemblies and adjust the wheel bearings.

22. Lower the vehicle and check brake operation.

Noticing a little more travel on brake pedal and handbrake lever and wonder whether some adjustment can be made to reduce this travel on brake pedal


your rear brakes are worn or the self adjusters are rusted, assuming you have drum rear brakes & not disc pads in the rear.
Try backing up several times with very hard stops to activate the self adjusters. If you don't back up much, the self adjusters can not work. Parking brake will be adjusted at the same time.

Remove replace rear brakes on ford t bird 1996


1989-97 Vehicles Drum Brakes (Let me know if you need the Disc Brake Instructions)

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies, then remove the brake drum.

  3. Install Brake Cylinder Clamp D81L-1103-B or equivalent, over the ends of the
    rear wheel cylinder.
  4. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.

  5. Remove the 2 brake shoe hold-down retainers, springs and pins.
  6. Spread the brake shoes over the piston shoe guide slots. Lift the brake
    shoes, springs and adjuster off the backing plate as an assembly. Be careful not
    to bend the adjusting lever.

  7. Remove the adjuster spring. To separate the shoes, remove the retracting
    springs.
  8. Remove the parking brake lever retaining clip and spring washer. Remove the
    lever from the pin.

    To install:

  9. Apply a light coating of caliper slide grease to the backing plate brake
    shoe contact areas.
  10. Apply a light coat of lubricant to the threaded areas of the adjuster screw
    and socket. Assemble the brake adjuster with the stainless steel washer. Turn
    the socket all the way down on the screw, then back off 1?2 turn.
  11. Install the parking brake lever to the trailing shoe with the spring washer
    and a new retaining clip. Crimp the clip to securely retain the lever.
  12. Position the trailing shoe on the backing plate and attach the parking brake
    cable. Position the leading shoe on the backing plate and attach the lower
    retracting spring to the brake shoes.
  13. Install the adjuster assembly to the slots in the brake shoes. The socket
    end must fit into the wider slot in the leading shoe. The slot in the adjuster
    nut must fit into the slots in the trailing shoe and parking brake lever.

  14. Install the adjuster lever on the pin on the leading shoe and to the slot in
    the adjuster socket.
  15. Install the upper retracting spring in the slot on the trailing shoe and the
    slot in the adjuster lever. The adjuster lever should contact the star and
    adjuster assembly.
  16. Install the brake shoe anchor pins, springs and retainers. Remove the brake
    cylinder clamp tool
  17. Install the brake drum, wheel and tire assemblies and lower the vehicle.
  18. Apply the brakes several times while backing up the vehicle. After each
    stop, the vehicle must be moved forward.

Brake Shoes Removal & Installation Duo-Servo Type To Remove:
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drums.
  4. Using a brake tool, remove the shoe return springs.
  5. Remove the shoe guide.
  6. Remove the hold-down springs and pins.
  7. Remove the actuator lever and pivot.
  8. Remove the lever return spring.
  9. Remove the actuator link, parking brake strut, spring retaining ring.
  10. Remove the parking brake lever and washer.
  11. Remove the shoe assemblies.
  12. Remove the adjuster screw and spring from the shoe assembly.
To Install:
  1. Use brake cleaning fluid to remove dirt from the brake drum. Check the drums for scoring, cracks and for out-of-round; service the drums as necessary.
  2. Check the wheel cylinders by carefully pulling the lower edges of the wheel cylinder boots away from the cylinders. If there is excessive leakage, the inside of the cylinder will drip fluid; repair or replace as necessary.
  3. Check the flange plate, which is located around the axle, for leakage of differential lubricant.
  4. Lightly lubricate the parking brake cable, parking brake lever where it enters the shoe and the backing plate-to-shoe contact points. Use high temperature, waterproof, grease or special brake lube.
  5. Install the parking brake lever into the secondary shoe with the attaching bolt, spring washer, lockwasher, and nut. It is important that the lever move freely before the shoe is attached. Move the assembly and check for proper action.
  6. Lubricate the adjusting screw and make sure it works freely.
  7. Connect the adjuster screw and spring to the bottom portion of both shoes. Ensure the spring does not interfere with the adjuster rotation when installed. The primary (smaller shoe pad area) to the front and secondary shoe (larger shoe pad area) to the rear of the vehicle.
  8. Install the shoe assembly. Ensuring the shoe webs are positioned correctly against the wheel cylinder.
  9. Install the parking brake cable.
  10. Secure the primary shoes with the hold-down pin and spring.
  11. Install the parking brake strut and the strut spring.
  12. Install the actuator lever and pivot, securing the assembly with the hold-down pin and spring. Install the actuator link and spring.
  13. Install the return springs.
  14. Check the operation of the self-adjusting mechanism by moving the actuating lever by hand.
  15. Adjust the brakes and install the drum.
  16. Adjust the parking brake.
  17. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
Leading-Trailing Type To Remove:
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drums.
  4. Raise the lever arm of the actuator until the upper end is clear of the slot in the adjuster screw.
  5. Slide the actuator off the adjuster pin. Disconnect the actuator spring from the shoe.
  6. Remove the hold-down spring assemblies and pins.
  7. Pull the bottom ends of the shoes apart and lift the lower return spring over the anchor plate. Allow the shoe ends to come together and remove the spring.
  8. Remove the shoe assembly, along with the upper return spring and the adjusting screw assembly.
  9. Remove the upper return spring and the adjusting screw assembly from the shoes.
  10. Remove the retaining ring, pin, spring washer, and parking brake lever.

To Install:
  1. Clean adjuster wheel and the backing plates with a suitable cleaner. Lubricate the backing plate contact points, levers and adjuster with a suitable lubricant.
  2. Assemble the parking lever, spring washer (concave side facing the brake lever), pin, and retaining ring onto the rearward shoe.
  3. Install the adjuster pin in the forward shoe with the pin projecting 0.276 in. (7mm) from the side of the shoe web where the adjuster actuator is installed.
  4. With the brake shoes resting on a flat surface (the shoe with the parking lever to the rear of the vehicle), install the upper return spring.
  5. Install the adjuster screw assembly with the spring clip facing the backing plate.
  6. Place the shoes in position on the backing plate. Do not place the lower shoe webs under the anchor plate.
  7. Install the lower return spring, spread the bottom of the shoes and position the shoe against the backing plate.
  8. Install the hold-down pins and spring assemblies.
  9. Install the adjuster actuator over the end of the adjuster pin so the top leg engages the notch in the adjuster screw.
  10. Install the actuator spring, being careful not to over-stretch it more than 3.27 in. (83mm).
  11. Install the parking brake cable to the lever.
  12. Adjust the parking brake if the shoes will not totally retract.
  13. Install the drum, tire and wheel assembly. Adjust the rear brakes and lower the vehicle.

Does the abs sensor have to come off to change rear brake shoes on accent?


hi from the uk in answer to your question you do not need to disconnect or remove the abs sensor you just remove the brake drum from the hub then remove shoe locating springs that retain shoes to backplate then lift off and remove bottom return spring this then allows you to slip the brake shoes off w/cyl at top complete with spring and auto adjuster ? then to remove the handbrake cable just pull the shoe and the quadrant lever apart so cable can be lifted out of the hook up on lever ? you can now interchange shes/springs /adjuster on your bench ? also run te adjuster wheel back on thread to off position this will enable you to fit shoes back to backplate and moreso help in fitting cable to its hookup ? when brakeshoes are refitted ? and centralized on back plate ? you can manuall rotate the adjuster wheel and keep tryin the drum for fitting and rotating with no binding trial/error method when satisfied ? refit screws to secure drum then do same with other side when completed you must bleed both wheels this will improve b/pedal your handbrake will also be better/less travel when applied hope these instructions help you ? best wishes from uk

Handbrake problem


hi fro uk when you reassembled brake shoes? did you notice the tubular bar just below b/cylinder? it fits between the two shoes and has a toothed wheel on the treaded side(l/h) this is the auto adjuster ie as tooth wheel is rotated it extends the treaded side thus adjusting shoes to drum o/k? this is normally done auto by the small lever below but when fitting new shoes you must adjust this rod with tooth wheel and keep trying drum fitting when you can fit drum /just? fit and press brake to centralise shoes to drum then adjust again if req'd so that drum fits and rotates withh shoes not binding ?? do both sides THENyou willdrums fitted you will feel b/pedal is improved ie less travel on braking ? SO FIRST THING YOU HAVE TO DO IS SLACKEN OFF H/BRAKE CABLE ADJUSTMENT /SLACK ? then proceed with the above instruction afterwards if you do as above then you pull h/brake up one notch ? then adust slack from cable to light tension release h/brake and ensure wheels rotate freely when you apply h/brake it should hold on approx four//five notch ? hope this helps

How to install rear brakeshoes


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
If you are not thoroughly familiar with the procedures involved in brake replacement, only disassemble and assemble one side at a time, leaving the other wheel intact as a reference.
1983-88 Vehicles
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
  1. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle with jackstands.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drum, as outlined earlier in this section.
  4. Place Brake Cylinder Clamp D81L-1103-B or equivalent, over the ends of the brake cylinder.
CAUTIONBe careful that the springs do not slip off the tool during removal, as they could cause personal injury.
  1. Remove the shoe-to-anchor springs, using Brake Shoe R and R Spring BT-11, or equivalent, then unhook the cable eye from the anchor pin.

  1. Remove the shoe guide (anchor pin) plate.
  2. Remove the shoe hold-down springs, shoes, adjusting screws, pivot nut, socket and automatic adjustment parts.
  3. Remove the parking brake link, spring and retainer. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  4. After removing the secondary brake shoe, disassembly the parking brake lever from the shoe by removing the retaining clip and spring washer.

  1. The brake cable must be connected to the secondary brake shoe before the shoe is installed on the backing plate. To do this, first transfer the parking brake lever from the old secondary shoe to the new one. This is accomplished by spreading the bottom of the horseshoe clip and disengaging the lever. Position the lever on the new secondary shoe and install the spring washer and the horseshoe clip. Close the bottom of the clip after installing it. Grasp the metal tip of the parking brake cable with a pair of pliers. Position a pair of side cutter pliers on the end of the cable coil spring, and using the plier as a fulcrum, pull the coil spring back with the side cutters. Position the cable in the parking brake lever.
  2. Apply a light coating of high temperature grease to the brake shoe contact points on the backing plate. Position the primary brake shoe on the front of the backing plate and install the hold-down spring and washer over the mounting pin. Install the secondary shoe on the rear of the backing plate.
  3. Install the parking brake link between the notch in the primary brake shoe and the notch in the parking brake lever.
  4. Install the automatic adjuster cable loop end on the anchor pin. Make sure the crimped side of the loop faces the backing plate.
  5. Install the return spring in the primary brake shoe and, using the tapered end of the brake spring service tool, slide the top of the spring onto the anchor pin.
CAUTIONBe careful to make sure that the spring does not slip off the tool during installation, as it could cause injury.
  1. Install the automatic adjuster cable guide in the secondary brake shoe, making sure the flared hole in the cable guide is inside the hole in the brake shoe. Fit the cable into the groove in the top of the cable guide.
  2. Install the secondary shoe return spring through the hole in the cable guide and the brake shoe. Using the brake spring tool, slide the top of the spring onto the anchor pin.
  3. Clean the threads on the adjusting screw and apply a light coating of high temperature grease to the threads. Screw the adjuster closed, then open it 1/2 turn.
  4. Install the adjusting screw between the brake shoes with the star wheel nearest to the secondary shoe. Make sure the star wheel is in a position that is accessible from the adjusting slot in the backing plate.
  5. Install the short hooked end of the automatic adjuster spring in the proper hole in the primary brake shoe.
  6. Connect the hooked end of the automatic adjuster cable and the free end of the automatic adjuster spring in the slot in the top of the automatic adjuster lever.
  7. Pull the automatic adjuster lever (the lever will pull the cable and spring with it) downward and to the left and engage the pivot hook of the lever in the hole in the secondary brake shoe.
  8. Check the entire brake assembly to make sure that everything is installed properly. Make sure that the shoes engage the wheel cylinder properly and are flush on the anchor pin. Make sure that the automatic adjuster cable is flush on the anchor pin and in the slot on the back of the cable guide. Make sure that the adjusting lever rests on the adjusting screw star wheel. Pull upward on the adjusting cable until the adjusting lever is free of the star wheel, then release the cable. The adjusting lever should snap back into place on the adjusting screw star wheel and turn the wheel one tooth.
  9. Expand the brake adjusting screw until the brake drum will just fit over the brake shoes.
  10. Install the brake drum and wheel and tire assembly, then adjust the brakes.
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.
