Question about 1997 Geo Metro

2 Answers

1997 Geo Metro. Thought car had a mechanical fuel issue, so replaced the Fuel pump and fuel filter with no luck. If dead cold, it will run for ex amount of time, usually enough to go a few blocks and back, then it will die and not start again. It's not over heating, but acting like it's heat related. I ran a test for the fuel injector and it's not plugged, but no gas is passing through it via the cars input (computer I assume). It's getting spark and when i bypass the injector, by grounding the ground wire on the injector, I can get it to run briefly, so surely not a spark issue. What's left, crank angle sensor, if it has one cause i see a simular sensor on bottom of engine, map, mass flow, if it has that, or throttle position sensor? How can I test each via ohm meter to get rough idea if something is bad. Thanks a million!

Pretty sure I found the problem. By tapping on the injector with a wrench, the car will run and even continues to run as long as I keep tapping on it (if I keep a steady tap and nothing irratic).

I wired a 12v lamp into the wiring harness to the main fuel injector and low and behold the light will flash, but car will not run, at least not until I start tapping on the injector again.

So, I am 99.98% confident the Geo needs a new injector, but first, I will attempt a rebuild, you know, going about things cheap, hehe.

Turns out it wasn't the actual injector that was bad, it was the black top connector to the injector. They use medium strenght Lok-Tite on the two screws that holds the top plate onto the injector, so make sure to tap on the philips end while unscrewing them. Took my wife and I to do it cause they are really in there. Once out, the injector had signs of arcing on one of it's terminals. Good thing the terminals are sealed from the gas, POOF, lol. Anyhow, car is running, driving and best of all, it's staying running!

I had something with these same symptoms as this happen to me last year. in my case the actual fuel injector was jambed and did not feed the injector assembly any fuel even though everything else was fine. I had the injector replaced and now it runs like a charm.

Check the ohms value of the coolant temperature sensor for the computer (not the one for the dash)
It will have a 2-wire connector, and this sensor is commonly located at or near the thermostat housing, Do this check when the engine starts to act up. If the ohms reading is drastically deviated from spec, then you have identified the problem. G/L

I have a 99 geo metro.4 cyl no start condition.new fuel pump/filter.will start with ether and hold about 2000rpm if holding throttle..will not idle or start withought the ether...help please.

First off.... You have to make sure it IS getting fuel. Are you sure the fuel pump is getting 12volts... the fuel filter is installed in the right direction? Have you disconnected the supply line at the throttle bodt to verify fuel pressure and volume? If it starts with ether... there is definately a fuel supply issue from the tank

I have a 97 geo metro 4 cyl engine the other day broke down the wrecker driver said sounds like fuel pump is bad. I replaced pump and filter still would not start. getting fire. Last night I started it...

first check fuses. (test them)
then check for spark at all 4 cylinders. good.?
if not timed correctly (spark) with timing light, then the cam belt slipped. (oops not changed at 60k, oops)
if all that is good engine runs on test fuel, does it?
if yes, you lost fuel.

97 geo metro replaced fuel pump, has new timing belt, gets spark to plugs will run with ether sprayed in carb but wont stay running, has new water pump, new fuel pump relay, ...someone said check the ECM...

The cam sensor controls the injector pulse. No cam signal = no fuel. Also these cars are known for wires chaffing through on the injector harness. If any of the wires are shorted out it will kill all the injectors and result in a no fuel no start situation. Check the wiring first, normally a no cam signal will set a code and a check engine light. Make sure the fuses are good also. Hope this helps.

When car is cold starts right up, after driving for short distances, few miles, won't start, have to wait an hour and then it will start. It turns over, but not getting gas, is it a fuel system problem? It...

I have the same problem. Started in 2001. I got lucky and pulled the fuel pump relay, then stuck it back in and it started. I replaced that relay and it worked fine for 7-8 years. Now I am experiencing the same problem. Another forum I read suggested during a cold start, the fuel pump works from the circuit breaker, but after the car is heated up, it works frm the oil pressure? (I didn't understand it) but it went on to say that as the car heats up, the oil thins down and the car won't start. It didn't mention a fix for this. Just try the relay. It's about $30. Maybe they just get weak?

Geo metro 97. Runs great for a day then wont start the next

Your timing belt is worn out. Some days it runs good because the cogs are lined up. The next time you start it, it maybe backfires just a touch, and it's out of time. Today, it's really out. Or maybe even broken.
