Question about 1996 Honda Prelude

1 Answer

Can I use a regular 87 unleaded instead of a 91 premium gas on my 1996 honda prelude? Will it damage, decrease the life span of my engine? Lose performance as well?

    Thanks

  • izzy95121 Sep 29, 2009

I had my 1996 Honda Prelude since 2000 of January. I am thankful that I have not worn out my clutch yet. I never replaced it since I bought it at the dealership. It only had couple of thousand miles on it, maybe around 3k to 4k only. Is it possible that it will need replacement soon? What type of clutch do I need to buy to have it last this long in case I will replace it someday? Thanks for the suggestions

Yes u can but you will loose performance and fuel mileage, it will really not be worth the few cents more you pay, if you use the midgrade 89 octane that is a better choice.

clutches usually last around 50,000-100,000 miles, it all depends on the area you ive in (mountains, falt lands etc.) and how much of your driving is stop and go, like commuting

What kind of gas does a maxima 2001

According to page 10-3 of the 2001 Nissan Maxima Owner's Manual:

FUEL RECOMMENDATION
Unleaded premium gasoline with an octane
rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index)
number (Research octane number 96)
If unleaded premium gasoline is not available,
unleaded regular gasoline with an
octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Research
octane number 91) can be used.
However, for maximum vehicle performance,
the use of unleaded premium gasoline
is recommended.

Engine "knock" is not just an unusual sound - but over time can cause real damage to the engine. You *should* use fuels with the recommended octane levels, but if you choose to use fuel with a lower octane level due to reduce fuel costs - do not repeatedly use fuel that causes engine knock. Find the "sweet spot" between the cost of lower octane fuel and an octane level that does not cause knocking. Expect fuel economy and performance to drop with lower octane fuels, too.

Good luck!

Just purchased a 2003 BMW 330XI and previous owner said he only used regular 87 Octone gasoline and the car runs fine with no pinging. Is this ok or should I use premium unleaded ?

You don't HAVE to put premium fuel in your car, but the maunfacturer's specifications call for it. Therefore, you will get the OPTIMAL power and OPTIMAL fuel efficiency if you follow factory specifications. Premium fuel really isn't that much more expensive. For a regular fuel cost of $2.51 and a 15gal tank its $37.65 to fill up. For premium cost of $2.74 it's $41.10 to fill up. $3.45 a tank is an EXTREMELY small price to pay for better fuel efficiency and power. Besides the better MPG will make up for the rise in price.

Is premium gas a must for the regular 4.7L V8.

Your jeep has two engine options, one was a standard 4.7 V8 and the High Output V8. Below is the recommended octane fuel rating.
Unleaded regular, 87 octane (R + M)/2 - Standard;

Unleaded premium, 93 octane (R+M)/2 recommended - High Output
Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

What type of gas does the mazda protege se take

regular 87 octane unleaded is sufficient for this car. putting premium in is a waste of money and can actually hurt performance. the only exception to this can be if you life in an extremely low altitude area (below sea level), in which case you sometimes need a higher octane to compensate for air density.

Is it harmful to a car to switch between uleaded and premium gas in a car? I have a 2009 Honda CRV and it says in the manuel that I can use anything 87 octane or higher. I have probably switched about 3...

Premium gas is still unleaded. Using a higher grade gas (ie: 89 or 91 octane) isn't going to hurt anything, and it isn't going to help anything either. You should stick to regular 87 as the higher octane rating gas isn't giving you any advantages.

CAN YOU USE REGULAR GAS IN A 2006 LEXUS GX470?

Only short term when absolutely necessary...

Your owner's manual says:
"
Fuel selection:
Select premium unleaded gasoline with an Octane Rating
of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher for optimum
engine performance. However, if such premium type
cannot be obtained, you may temporarily use unleaded
gasoline with an Octane Rating as low as 87 (Research
Octane Number 91)."

I use unleaded plus ALL the time for my car is that good or not good. whats the difference between regular unleaded, unleaded plus and super unleaded? which is best to use?

THE BEST THING IS TO USE WHAT YOUR SERVICE MANUAL CALL FOR. REGULAR UNLEADED 87 OCTANE - UNLEADED PLUS 89 OCTANE - SUPER UNLEADED 91 OCTANE. UNLEADED PLUS ITS OKAY. TO USE EVERY NOW AND THEN I WOULD USE 87.YOU CAN RUN 87 - 89 OCTANE.BUT DONT RUN 91 OCTANE ITS FOR THE HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINE.
