One possible cause ,and I don't want you to get ahead of yourself,so we may get more answers,is to remove the valve body and clean it. I own a Dakota and used to own a Trans Shop but we may get some info on this.

Lost overdrive while going down hwy. Trny cooler line replaced yesterday. No problem shifting prior.

Jasson, You need to check your trany fluid. After replacing the line and running it through the gears warm it fills all the air voids and can go down.
  1. Warm up car
  2. run it through the gears a couple of times
  3. with car running pull trany dip stick and wipe clean
  4. replace make sure it is all the way in.
  5. remove and read
  6. shut off car
  7. add if necessary DO NOT OVER FILL A LITTLE AT A TIME
  8. Check again steps 3 thru 5
  9. repeat as necessary till full
  10. replace dip stick
  11. check for leaks.
Hope this helps Mike

42re tranny in my 93 jgc seems to be stuck in low gear. 1st & 2nd seem to be the same and won't shift automatically at all. Will not shift into overdrive. Changed throttle position sensor, new tranny

if its not shifting make sure fluids are full (I'm sure you did) im just saying is your speed sensor on trany pluged in , and your throttle return cable from trany to fuel return hooked up

Transmission problems

Maybe your shifter is loose at the tranmission or a stick could have got stuck up under the vehicle in this area. Many people drive over such items thinking no problem, sometime there is with a low riding car. Also look under hood for the connection to your thottle body to see if something has happened there...good luck...

Internal transmission failure, What you describe is loss of prime. This can range from low fluid level to low pressure from the front pump. You can check you transmission fluid, have vehicle running placed in park check the transmission dip stick,The fluid must be in the range. You can also shot gun a repair by replacing the output speed sensor.

1988 olds cutlass 2.8 v6 4sp trany seems to stick in overdrive. trany fluid looks and smells fine. also shifts fine going up.

Hello,
I have a Olds Cutless Ciera 1089 with the 2.8 MFI V6, and my car was stalling more and more coming to a stop. It would always start right up, but as soon as I put in back in drive many times would stall again. You can try to prove that it is the Lock up clutch converter solenoid which is inside of a side cover on the drivers side. I unplugged mine and the problem went away for good. Per a GM dealership shop tech, said It won't hurt anything for a while. He said it wasn't urgent to fix a sticking solenoid, for weeks or months, but should fix it sometime. You might lose some of the gas mileage from unplugging it, no lock up at upper speeds. Old school cars never even had these, and they were plenty problematic in GM cars, of getting stuck or staying sticky. Hope this helps.

I have a "96 Chrysler

Open the hood and look from the driverside, look back and down you will be looking at the trany and at the top you will see the linkage arm with the cable going to it, have someone move it through the gears with engine off!!!!, and see if the arm is moving, if the arm is moving then you may have trany problems, these tranys are known for problems, good luck. hope this helps. also heres a diagram to help you locate the arm at trany.johnjohn2_59.gif

Transmission staying in low gear longer than usual, the next day same problem, then the engine overheats. Are the problems related?

this may be related, the computer will need to be scanned for any stored codes, then check your fluid level in the trany, these trucks have problems with the fan clutch and sometimes it make it feel like the trany is acting up, so have the fan clutch also checked out,

Car would not go into reverse. then could only drive it in 5th gear. then car began smoking. what is the problem?

check your trany oil, it may have a leak, that might be the smoking and if fluid is low the might be wht trany is actting up if its not the fluid then it needs rebuilding that expensive $$$$$$$$, good luck and hope it low on trany oil.

Problem solved!!

I had a tuner go over the wiring. He found a loose ground wire and grounded it properly. The transmission has been shifting correctly ever since!!! It felt like a mechanical problem, and acted like a mechanical problem, but it was just a loose ground wire.

Let this be a heads up on VW transmissions!

Thankfully it was only a loose ground wire and not a $5,000 trany!!
