1990 6 cy. 4wd toyota 4-4unner, 3.0 ok. over the

1990 6 cy. 4wd toyota 4-4unner, 3.0 ok. over the course of 2 years I have put in 5 alternators, 4 from auto zone, 1 original oem. used. I had the batterry checked. 3rd new sears diehard, it was good. This is what happenes after each new alternator. Runner starts fine, then hesitates at turn of key. Then longer hesitation. Then it does not start at all and battery is very low. I will charge battery over night, starts once, then back to jumping. And finally I will be going down thee roadand lose power having to be towed home. This all happens over a course of a month and when it gets to the towed stage, I take alternator out, have it tested, it's no good and I start the whole thing over again. I was hoping having the better alternator it would solve problem when in fact the problem started quicker this time. ok reADY FOR THE QUESTIONS!

this is what happens

I thought that my amp might be the problem,so i unpluggedit. Still happened. When I started up this last time, my meter read 14.5. When I keep the meter on the battery, I notice a slow drop to 12.6 when I got tired of watching it. Also, when turning on the lights, the meter drop very much. Quite a load. The thing is if I get my alterator tested it will be fine, along with the battery. The hesitation has me wondering. Could my starter be involved. Would it drain the battery if soleniod, etc was failing

It read 14.5 this last start up after new alterator and while keeping the meter on battery, I noticed a slow decline in volts till i stopped reading. about 5 minutes it was down to 12.6 When putting on light the drain was huge, 10volts andbck up to 12.6 off. I feel the volts would of kept dropping. After each new alternator, the meter would read above 14v.

ok left monday morning after jumping runner t get into garage. Wed. rnner started up with little hesitation battery reads 12.6 not running. dropped to 10v when starting and back to 14,45. running.

Are you running any high powered stereo system?
Maybe like a high powered amplifier to run big base speakers?
I'm thinking something is over-taxing the alternator by drawing to many amps from it all the time. Causing early burnout for the alternator.

As far as the readings go for the volt meter, everything sound normal. 14 volts is normal for an alternator while the engine is running. As far as it dropping down to 12.6 volts, sounds like the alternator stops working at the point.

10 volts is about right when using the starter to crank the engine.

I would have the vehicle checked out by shop that can do a complete electrical system check. Something in the wiring of the truck is causing this mess. A bad ground, open circuit, or a short. It would be hard to locate this problem without the proper circuit diagrams for the truck and test each wire.

Have you ever thought about the 'voltage regulator'. Replace it immediately. That's what is going on. The regulator controls the whole charging system and how much voltage the battery gets. Over charge, under charge, it's all bad news for the battery, and system. It's all controlled by the regulator.

You have got to put a meter on the battery when it's running and look at the alternator voltage output. You can not go over 13.5 volts. This will tell us what is going on with the system. The batteries are going out from over charging. There is something else going on to cause the overcharge.

1990 Toyota Camry DX 4cl 'Swollen battery''short some where?#2

The battery has seen better days wear gloves and eye protection in dealing with it. The alternator should be checked out. Get a NEW battery and put a voltmeter on the terminals and start the car. Voltage should be between 13.5 to 14.5 w all accessories on. Anything over this means the voltage regulator in the alternator is shot. Remember you can't test the alternator with the old battery ITS DANGEROUS. Batteries can short out especially if they are overcharged. You probably have a sulfated battery which means that its ability to accept and give a charge is destroyed . Therefore the battery is useless.

Alternater trouble Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2003

I have had the exact problem. I've changed altenator 3 times also and it has the same leak, but I've changed altenator an batterys over 2 year span. It just happend to me today after not driving it for 5 months. It's been in storage while I was away. Drive it fine for 2 days but today the radio kept shutting off and finally the car died right in the middle of the road. Bought a new battery because I had a warranty on last battery, but bought it just to get it home and in the driveway. Did you ever find out what was wrong with it?
