This car has hydro boost power steering and brakes most likely it would be a power steering pump but check the fluid level before you change it

Chak that the Auxilliary belt is correctly tensioned and rotating normally. This is responsible for the power steering, and may also be involved with the brake servo if the vacuum pump is belt driven.
Do not drive untill both systems are working properly again.

2004 Chevy tahoe power steering an power brakes went out at the same time what should I check first

Sounds like you have hydroboost, an alternative to vacuum booster for brakes. Hydraulic pressure from steering is used as driver assist for the brakes.

You can read about it on the link. Hope it helps.

I think my tie rods went bad on my 2004 cavalier the steering stopped all of a sudden no brakes hard to steer.is it the tie rods

Sounds like the car stalled while you were driving. That would cause the power steering to stop and make the steering hard and the engine vacuum to fall off and make the brakes very hard to apply. There is really no other scenario that would cause both systems to fail at the same time. And no, it is NOT the tie rods, regardless of what actually happened.

Battery and break indicator showed up and power steering went out all at the same time

Are you sure the drive belt is still on the engine ?
The battery light usually comes on when the alternator is not charging the battery, and the power steering is also belt driven.
The brake warning light can come on when the brake fluid is low, but also when the battery light comes on.

I have a 2000 oldsmobile intrigue; i went to go get new brake pads and when i got in my car to leave from the shop my wheel was stiff. I told the shop and basically they cleaned out my power steering fluid...

If the power steering was ok before the brake job, I would suspect something went amiss while the mechanics were working on the car. And why, when you returned to the shop, would they clean out your power steering fluid? I don't think I've ever heard of anyone doing that before. Unless they knew there was something wrong with the power steering fluid. This may sound crazy, but I'm thinking they topped your power steering reservoir off with hydraulic brake fluid when they were working on your brakes. If, in fact, they did put brake fluid in the power steering, changing the fluid would only remove the brake fluid from the reservoir. The rack and pinion assembly would still have the contaminant inside it, which could cause the steering problem you described.

My power steering and brakes went out last night; what would cause both those to got out at the same time? There was a puddle of red fluid on the ground. A hose maybe? hopefully?

Yes could be a hose to your power steering or a leak some where's. your brake work off of your power steering pump because your truck has a hydraboost and not a brake booster that work's off of vacum, so if it's low on power steering fluid the brakes will not work, to check add fluid to the pump and have some one turn the wheel all the way and hold while you check for leak's, hope this was very helpful, good luck

Some GM products did use a brake system that ran off the power steering pump. May want to phone a GM dealer to find if your Safari falls into that category. Ask for the service department. Sorry I could not be exact.

sounds like your hydro-vac went bad. this is located by your master cylinder inline. it uses your power steering pump to give boost to your brake system instead of a vacumn booster

Power steering and brakes went out at the same time

Yes, the power steering and the brake system are linked using a power booster system. You are going to have to get a new brake power booster. They are hard to find, so you may have to remove yours and have it rebuilt. The unit looks like a gearbox on the steering column under the hood.
Please remember to rate this.

the power brakes are a hydrolic system ran off of the power steering pump. therefore if you have a busted power steering hose the power brakes will not work.

Mine just did same (2001). Have them check the power steering pump--shaft broke in mine. This affects the brakes as well since both power brakes and power steering run off same system in Astros. Broken shaft messed up the booster system.
