It sounds like the sending unit on the fuel pump has been shorted out.

Can I take the fuel pump and filter out of my 2004 Kia Optima clean it and put it back in without damaging it I know you should buy a new one but trying to be cheap

You can, but it is not an easy chore to drop the tank, clean the top of the tank, and remove the retainer ring to access the fuel pump. Only to put it all back together and have to do it again. I would highly suggest installing a new unit if you go thru the effort to get to it.

I own a 2002 Chevy Cavalier with 131,800 miles on it. I had the fuel pump replaced 2 weeks ago and ever since then, I have noticed that the car seems to be burning almost twice as much fuel. I refilled the...

There most likely isn't a problem. The fuel gauge works off of a reisistor board that's mounted on the fuel pump assembly. There is a arm with a float attached to one end. On the other end there are needles that touch the resistor board. The float level changes where the needles touch the risistor board and that changes your fuel gauge. Not all resistor boards read exactly the same, especially if an AC Delco pump wasn't used. The gauge is just reading off a little bit compared to your original one. Try filling up, resetting your trip meter and then driving a good bit. When you fill up the next time figure your gas mileage by dividing the miles you went by how many gallons you used. I bet your still getting around the same gas mileage.

Gauge registers 3/4 full when full, then needle slowly goes down to empty. Flucuates between empty and 3/4 full while driving.

hi its either the fuel gauge playing up in the dash up or the fuel sender on the fuel pump in the tank

2000 Grand AM GT wont start. Sounds like the fuel pump runs for about 5 seconds when the key is turned on but no pressure at the fitting at the engine injectors. It turns over and wants to run on either so...

if it runs on either then it;s a fuel problem.the fuel pump may be humming but not producing enough pressure to the engine. i would do this first.replace the fuel filter and then if no help, replace the fuel pump. it;s in the gas tank and quite a bit of work to replace.put protective eyewear on,turn your key to the 'on' position and check for fuel on your engine fuel lines. if it pumps great ammount of fuel like that, your problems elsewhere.may be bad fuel pressure regulator, located on the fuel rail at the end where the fuel goes into injectors. thank you for choosing fixya.com

Fuel gage not working. Only a smsll light seen. Does the fuel pump need changing?

As long as the car is running fine it's safe to say the fuel pump does not need to be replaced. However the fuel tank sending unit may need to be replaced assuming the fuel gauge itself isn't at fault. First check your owners manual if available for your fuse block info and check fuses then I'd look into the sending unit. Let me know if you need help with that

Do I have to drop the tank to replace/repair fuel pump?

You got it! Not an easy job if you are not mechanically inclined. Get instructions, if done wrong, the gas needle will not work properly. (it wiil only register to half tank, be stuck, not work at all, etc..) I have repaired many because people did not know how to install it correctly. Make sure when you have it done, to purchase the "sock" that goes with the filter. It is a strainer, keeps impurities from being pumped to your filter

FITTING XC90 FUEL PUMP, COMPLETE WITH POLLY LINES

Sorry not sure what you are trying to do exactly. Change the fuel pump in the fuel tank? I'm posting because I recently had to do my Jaguar, maybe familiar.

I had to lower the entire rear suspension, wheels, differential and trailing arms. This allowed me to disconnect fuel lines going into middle bottom of fuel tank. Then I could continue removing fuel tank thru trunk including the filler neck. Then I could finally get to top of fuel tank and remove clips to remove fuel pump in tank. Funny how the instructions want you to empty the tank before you start. I had to do it with about 1/2 tank, how was I supposed to empty 10 gallons of fuel?
Good luck!

Got fuel in fuel tank and replaced fuel pump now dont have fuel going to front

Is the fuel pump fitted in the tank or is it an outside one?
If it's the one which is fitted in the tank thn probabely the rotation of the pump is wrong thus not pumping out the fuel.
If it's the kind tht is fitted onthe outside of the tank thn probabley the pipings are not done correctly or it may be sucking air.

Hope this helps!
