Question about 2003 Jeep Wrangler

Gear whine at all speeds, recent. looks like pinion seal leaking, wet. Whine stops when clutch in and coasting. Should I see my mechanic immediately?

Yes...It can only get worse. If mechanic is a good distance from you, add lube to the diff before going there.

Whine in transfer case


proper oil in transfer case ? most transfer cases have a separate oil reservoir, heavy duty off roading sometimes makes a hole in oil seals and oil leaks out , I allways wash off all my oil seals surfaces after a visit to the MUD PIT saves me a ton on fixing seals

Rear End Whine Under Load


Replacing gears and/or bearings in a differental is not an easy project. You'll need a press. The positioning of the gears requires a great deal of precision. Shims are used to acheve the correct setting. Preload setting on the pinion bearings is critical. I would recommend leaving this one to the experts.

Here are the common causes or rear end noises
Constant high pitched whine at all speeds: Pinion Bearings or Ring gear carrier bearings
Whine at steady speeds or whines on deceleration: Rear end gear set is worn and will need to be replaced.
Rumbling type of noises are caused by wheel bearings or a tire with a separated cord.

My 1996 GMC Sierra with 330,000 miles on it is struggling going from 1 to 2nd gear. I am loosing fluid at the rear trnsmission seal. There is a slight whine. Do you think fixing the seal will eliminate the...


That's a lot of miles on that transmission! The short answer is "no". Replacing the seal will stop the fluid leak, which should be done. However, the whine is an internal mechanical problem, quite possibly from the rear output carrier which commonly needs replacement. "Struggling going from 1-2nd gear" is not very descriptive. If it's a "long" shift requiring higher speed and rpm than normal then you could be having governor pressure sensor or switch problems, valve body issues or internal hydrolic issues. This one is not likely to be a DIY project. Also, don't waste your money on a "pour-in" additive - it won't fix anything. Find a reputable transmission shop and be sure to ask what the "worse case scenario cost" will be because that's what it will likely cost you. (Speaking from experience in trans shop)

Whine when air conditioner compressor engaged at lower speeds


If it is coming from under the hood(whine)then the ac compressor is either low on oil,or it is about to go out.Sometimes ac compressors will last a good long time,but sometimes they whine right before they lock up.So look for some ac compressor problems.Have a mechanic check it out,but it will most likely need to be changed out(compressor and components).

2005 Mercury Mountaineer rear end whine, how hard to fix


Before you do this you might want to try fresh gear lube. On Ford products they use a synthetic additive in the rear and not in the front 4x4 axle.
The next thing would be to determine if it is a wheel bearing or a pinion bearing. You have to pull the axles and eliminate them as the problem. You might get lucky and not need to do the pinion.
The technical part of shimming the pinion gears with replacing the pinion bearing is about the worst part of the job. You won't know about the gears until you see them. You will need extra shims on hand.
It is a moderate job for two people. If you have all the parts it can be done in a day.

Whining from engine when in gear


Just a thought- remove the oil filler cap when the whine is present - (this checks if PCV valve is faulty, causing high crankcase vacuum, which in turn causes a whistling/whine noise as air leaks past engine oil seals). Worth a check.

Try listening with a short piece of hose pipe to locate immediate area/source of noise.

Well you can remove the sensor in the diff and make sure that looks ok they g obad quiet often also woulnd not hurt too remove the rear diff cover and inspect the rear end if it is whining and you dont see anything wrong i would refill it with lucas oil/grease and start praying check the pinion too and see if it has any play in it

It's grinding very hard when i put it in gear, drive or reverse.


Make sure you have enough fluid, and honestly, regardless of the fluid level, change it and put in new transmission fluid. If it's an automatic, change the transmission filter too. You can try adding some Lucas stabilizer as well. If that doesn't do it, you may be looking at a rebuild or replacement.
