Question about Dodge Ram 250

2 Answers

Dodge, 92, V-8, 318, electrical shut-off, engine cranks but no spark at least from coil back, no codes even after multiple times, intermittent problem, then wait several hours spark comes back and car starts. Put spark light detector first on distributor for spark plug, no spark. Then put it on wire between distributor cap and coil, no spark. Problem has happened several times in the past even on the highway at high speeds, or normal speeds and is now happening even in the driveway overnight. Car has started up once ran for a minute and then did not start for hours, although this is not the usual method which is to cut off abruptly after running for awhile. Still never a code.

I hate just changing parts, so far I changed the computer, from one mechanic and the crank sensor from another all to no avail. I wasn't sure it wasn't fuel related till now, changed the fuel pump in the tank, but now I saw no spark for sure. If it were the coil wouldn't it throw a code and how about the capacitor would it show on the scanner?

Check that your have primary 12 v to the coil when it won't start. Can there be a loose connection?Coil is inexpensive to replace,Does distributor have a capacitator? Small cylinder by points.Change it too.I would check all grounds and connections clean and tighten.Good Luck.

Testimonial: "I think the ground is likely, not the coil, since there are no codes. Why the capacitor? I've already changed the crank sensor as well. Thanks "

Check your voltae regulator. its usuall on the firewall. just take it off, and look at the back. normally its a metal housing that contains the circuits inside, which are surrounded by this plasticy stuff. look at the back, and see if its melted at all. i had a similar problem with my 79, and turns out that voltage regulator was fried.

I have a p2323 code and replaced the spark plugs. I pulled the battery cable and after a week the code came back. What could be causing this.

P2323 Dodge - Ignition Coil Secondary Number 8 Circuit Condition - Faulty spark plug or coil boot
- Faulty Ignition Coil 8
- Ignition Coil 8 harness is open or shorted
- Ignition Coil 8 circuit poor electrical connection
Possible symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Engine may be running rough

P2323 Dodge Description
The ignition system is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on all engines. Each cylinder is equipped with 1 dual-output coil. Meaning one coil mounts directly over one of the dual spark plugs for 1 high-voltage output.
Battery voltage is supplied to all of the ignition coils positive terminals from the ASD relay. If the PCM does not see a signal from the crankshaft and camshaft sensors (indicating the ignition key is ON but the engine is not running), it will shut down the ASD circuit.
Base ignition timing is not adjustable. By controlling the coil ground circuits, the PCM is able to set the base timing and adjust the ignition timing advance. This is done to meet changing engine operating conditions.
The PCM adjusts ignition timing based on inputs it receives from:
- The engine coolant temperature sensor
- The crankshaft position sensor (engine speed)
- The camshaft position sensor (crankshaft position)
- The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
- The throttle position sensor
- Transmission gear selection

Engine cranks but wont start intermittently

It sounds like 1 of 2 problems or both first the temperature control sensor witch tells the computer the ambient temperature outside and as it gets colder out tells the computer to give more fuel the other thing to check is the throttle position sensor that tells the computer what position the throttle is in those 2 things together are like a choke on a carburetor seeing it fuel injected you can't pump the throttle you will flood it so the computer has to do it hope this works

Why does 91 dodge dakota shuts off power to coil after driving

The auto shut down relay controls power to the coil and fuel injection so if on power is at the coil once the engine dies this is normal check cranking it should return but no spark then test the crank shaft sensor iit is on back of engine passenger side bolted to block.

po700 code just means you have codes
P0351-IGNITION COIL #1 PRIMARY CIRCUIT

WHEN MONITORED
With battery voltage greater than 8 volts during engine cranking or greater than 13 volts with engine running. Engine RPM less than 3000. No coil in dwell during test.

SET CONDITION
Peak current is not achieved with battery based dwell plus 1.5 msec of diagnostic offset. It takes less than 3 seconds during cranking or up to 6 seconds while running to set.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Ignition coil
- Intermittent condition
- ASD relay output circuit
- Ignition coil driver circuit open
- Ignition coil driver circuit shorted to ground
- PCM

If the engine was ran that much after overheating, you probably warped the head.

The crank sensor may also have been damaged by heat and need to be replaced. Check the spark plugs as well for cracked insulators or worn (read melted) tips.
