Question about 1997 Volvo 850

1 Answer

I see and smell coolant through the interior side vents and have noticed a coolant loss over the last several months, when the low coolant light comes on. I add coolant to the overflow tank which is temp fix but the problem repeats.

There is a leakinside the passenger compartment in the heater core housing.

Could be the heater core or a hose connection to the core.
The coolant is exiting to the ground outside through the water drain tube attached to the bottom of the heater housing (normally, this drain tube will drain water that was condensed by the A/C).

A quick repair, if you don't need the heater for now:
Under the hood, re-route the heater hoses by connecting each hose end to each other with a 5/8 inch diameter hose connector (like splicing a garden hose).

Eventually, the heater core will need to be replaced.

Smelling antifreeze coming from a/c vents

this is a sign of a broken or punctured heater radiator which is located in the car cabinet that causes coolant to leak. you should also have noticed that the coolant level becomes low. you can either replace it or have it disconnected by removing the hoses that feed it with hot coolant, then you will have no heater inside the car cabinet.

I smell gas but i'm not lossing any.

My first question is - is the check engine light on when you are driving ?
You could have a leaking injector which could be causing fuel to escape thru the exhaust. You could also have a leak in the vent system for the gas tank.
The need for coolant and oil if no leaks are visible usually means the engine is burning the fluids because of an internal engine leak or head gasket problem.

Ok so my Explorer has been one problem right after another. Recently I had the timing chains replaced at a cost of 1400 dollars. Then right after I got it back the alternator went out and I had that...

OK, one thing at a time.

1. The smell of coolant in the interior most likely indicates a leaking heater core. Unless you possess a fair bit of mechanical aptitude, I wouldn't recommend that you try to do this job yourself. If you want to try an inexpensive "patch" you can try stop leak products from Bar's Leaks (www.barsleaks.com)

2. The sense of a loss in power steering could be as simple as a too low level of fluid in the pump or as complex as fluid bypassing worn piston(s) in the rack and pinion unit. As with #1 above, I think if I were you, I'd try some Lucas power steering conditioner and stop leak. I've had great luck in salvaging units with problems with their products.

1998 cadillac deville leaking coolant, temperature was around 196 and when leaking started temperature has gone as high as 225, what is causing this problem?

This most certainly sounds like a water pump issue. The thermostate is located inside the water pump housing and if the pump is bad you'l lose fluids and need to add every day or so. The temp guage will run hot and often the heater won't warm up. You have even notice fluids on the ground below the front passenger side of the car. Try getting a pressure test first before replacing anything. That's a good place to start the diagnosis.

Check for loss of coolant also. If you can see/smell oily deposits on windshield, it's unlikely it's from the a/c system as there is relatively little lubricant there. More likely your heater core is leaking and allowing coolant to be blown up onto the windshield. There will also be a distinctive odor with this.

Your auto is definitely loosing coolant and will overheat. Check your thermostat, hoses, belts, radiator cap and water pump. If you do not fix the leak or coolant circulation problem you can destroy your engine. The smell inside can be being picked up from the outside vent or it could be your heater core inside the ventillation area leaking (which could be your coolant leak).. If that is the case you will need to replace the heater core.
