If his scanner won't pick up the computer then the fuse may be blown for the computer or the DLC data link connector fuse may be bad it has two. If the DLC is dead test the three fuses in the cab and the one in the engine compartment on passenger side. if still no Data then you have a bigger problem. The 97 98 changed and They had some problems with the harness Where the plug goes into the fuse inside the cab to the computer.

Truck runs rough and will not pick up speed also abs light came on, idles up and down.

Do you smell a burning smell? or smoke from the wheels? (brakes) You may be running with the brakes activated due to ABS problem (no pickup) and your accelerating & the PC is lowering the idle. (erratic idle?) Or a idle speed control or throttle positioning sensor? Get that one checked out. It could be as simple as a vacuum leak. That's a hard one to call without checking it out. Good luck

I have a 1993 pick up hardbody' a lot of black smoke coming out and idle is rough..any suggestions on what may be the problem?

With the black smoke, it sounds like it's running rich (too much gas going into the motor). Remove a spark plug and take a look at it- if it's all black and sooty, then yes, your motor's running too rich and you need to lean out the fuel mixture. I'm not positive, but that truck probably has a carburetor and you could do the adjustment yourself, with a little help from a shop manual. If it's fuel injected, you'll want to take it to a shop or a friend that knows what they're doing to get it adjusted right again.

If the spark plug has little tiny clumps of stuff stuck to it you're burning oil, and that's a bigger problem. An oil leak means a fairly major engine rebuild is in store for you. If it is burning oil, I'd just drive it like it is until it eventually conks out or something else goes wrong on it. Unless, of course, the truck is special to you and worth investing in an engine rebuild...

Good luck!

Black smoke coming out of the tailpipe is a sign that your engine is flooding. Also makes it run rough.

I had a blocked micro filter above needle & seat. Removed and kitted the carb out. Replaced the carb and the engine would not idle smoothly. I replaced the carb with a new one and it was worse. Found a...

Are you sure it's a 96? I thought Nissan went to fuel injection about 4 - 5 years before that. In any case, it seems the fuel is not getting shut off in the carb at the needle valve/seat. With the idle jet screw fully in, it should not run at all at idle, and if you're getting black smoke, you've got fuel definitely getting into the manifold. You need to check the float level, and make sure the float doesn't have a hole in it. If it doesn't float, it can't shut off the fuel. I'm assuming that you are troubleshooting with the air cleaner off and the choke plate is not closed.
