Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable.
I don't know if your vehicle is 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive, but please note that on some 4WD vehicles, access to the starter is difficult due to the front driveshaft and/or related hardware. This may or may not be the case with your vehicle, but be prepared to remove other parts if necessary.
There are two bolts that are installed vertically at the bottom of the starter near the bell housing cover. Remove them and hold the starter up while doing so. The starter should then drop down far enough to disconnect the wiring attached to the solenoid. Note where the wires are removed from in order to reconnect them correctly.
Remove the starter and reverse the process to install the new one.
You may have to twist and/or reorient the starter to get it out and to replace it. Remove other parts, such as the bell housing inspection cover, as necessary.
Good luck with your project! Hope this helps...

My Distributor shaft gears stripped out I will need to replace the gears. I have no idea how to figure out when #1 cylinder is at top dead center for the enitial timing.I am working on a 1999 chevy vortec...

remove plug from #1 cylinder have someone to bump the starter , while you place a finger over the spark plug hole, when the pressure from the cylinder blowes your finger off of the hole, check the timing marks,if they are lined up right ,#1 should then be on "top dead center"
hope you make it !

L999 Chevy Cavalier keeps blowing fuses and won't start

you have a SERIOUS electrical problem. - '.
BUT which fuses keep blowing - that is where we need to start.
1. is it the ignition circuit. - - does starter motor turn over when you trun the key.
2. is it the starter relay circuit.
3. is it the starter motor circuit.
4. is it the computer circuit. - - do you have fuel pumping to the engine and cylinders.
5. none of the above. - - do you have spark at the spark plugs.

Last week my 1999 chevy shut off while it was running outside of my house... Tried replacing the coil & changing the battery & it still won't crank. The electric works fine but engine only makes...

Sounds like your starter is bad, the clicking is the starter solenoid, but the starter motor don't work, starter motor and solenoid, will come as one assembly, replace starter.

Starter replacement......needs to know how many cylinders my cars has

The starter has no cylinders. it is an electric motor powered from the battery and ignition system.
The chevy cavalier has a 4 cylinder engine though.

1999 suburban starter replaced battery good turns over eratic

The starter may be binding on the flywheel/flex plate. Your new starter should have come with shims. Try putting them between the starter and the block one at a time and see if that helps.
