Yes the pump could be bad .The proper fuel pressure should be at least 35 psi have this checked first.

After getting engine warm in my 98 dakota sometimes it quits and cranks and cranks but wont start

How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? Some dodge vehicles you can get mil codes, not sure about your year? It won't hurt to try, turn key just till dash lites come on, no further, cycle the key on--off, on--off, on. Then the mil on the dash starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your looking for two digit codes.

Also, when the problem is ongoing have a helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure, not only check for correct fuel pressure check that the pressure will hold for a bit, with everything off.
Sometimes with idle issues, I check the idle air system.

Car won't start

why ignore the CEL??????
you cross over the spark wires. lost firing order.
its not PVC but is due.
sure, lost spark, lost spark time, crossed wire.
if spark is good try test fuel
clean the EGR, if it sticks open car will never idle fast.
and will stall.
clean the ISC do the ECU can in fact now control idle.

you are are on track, most here are not.
you did a tune up, that is good , and is first.
bad fuel, car parked for year, dead?
now the 1 question, (after it runs)
can your happy right off save the stall
only this counts..... 1st....

check firing order now that wires are scrambled.
then check for spark on all 4 cyl spark wire ends.
then if spark is good,
and compression, good, 150 not 80psi
you do know this is and inteference engine right? and if not
fresh timing belt the engine will grenade. for sure.
dont listen to dorks telling you, mine didnt, they are idiots.
if you like Russian roulette ? and $3000 new motors are joy?
then skip the belt.

that finishes off a 60k turn up, spark , filters and da belt.
then spark timing.
then fueling.

all the fuel in the world is useless on a dead motor or dead spark'.

fueling is last.
if motor and spark are good, then yes, fueling
try test fuel (spary)
if that works for duration of spray
then check fuel pressure
that be next.
and more... ask

If it only dies when hot it could be coil related. Sometimes after they get hot if they are bad they will lose spark. After it dies check to see if you are getting spark to your plugs.

The truck sometimes barely starts. then once it does, it idles fine. but when you give hard acceleration, it falls on its face. not the fuel pump or the filter, and definately not spark. its a 96 chevy 350...

Lets go back to the fuel pump. I am working on one now that has the same symptoms. It turns out it is the fuel pump. Still pumping fuel, just not enough pressure. Hard start, idles fine give it some fuel and dies. One other thing that I can think of that will do this is clogged catalytic converters.

if you have'nt replaced those spark plugs and wires lately, you need to.and also, lucas fuel treatment, in my personal opinion,is the very best for unclogging fuel lined and injectors.it being below a 1999 model and your check engine light is on, you can have it coderead for free if you're near anautozone or advance automotive parts store. they will code read it and tell you why that check engine lights coming on.hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

Car will shutdown while driving. Sometimes will

The OBD II is used for emissions systems only for the most part. You did not say if it was cranking over or not. If it is cranking over then you need to see if it's a fuel pump problem or a spark problem. First turn the key on and listen for fuel pump to run for to seconds,if you here it then check that you have fuel at the fuel pressure port, looks like a bicycle tire valve pull the cap off and push the center valve pin in. Do this only on a cold engine if gas comes out it has fuel pressure. Next pull a spark plug wire off and check for spark by cranking engine over, do these procedures when it won't start. if you have no spark then it's electrical and will need more information to what to check first. If you have no fuel pressure then you will have to test fuel pump pressure to see if it will pressurize and if it will hold pressure to 60 PSI

89 dodge shadow. hard start. normal idle cold, fast idle warm. sometimes it wont start until i hear fuel pump activate.

Hello,
The car may be hard to start because it may need a normal tune-up. If the spark plugs are pretty used, they will slowly stop burning as much fuel because the spark slowly gets lesser and lesser. On a cold day the fuel is harder to ignite with a small amount of spark.
Normal idle when its cold means that your cars idle is probably too high. If you lower the idle, the choke on a cold day will keep the idle a little higher until the motor warms and then it will kick back off. If the idle is too high, it will run very rich, smothering itself with fuel, and causing the idle to stay low. When the car warms, its creating better spark when its warm, and with the idle being too high its running at a fast idle.
The car wont start sometimes can be the cause of a few things. If the ground is bad on the fuel pump, it wont make a good connection sometimes for when you turn the key on, the fuel pump dont pump the fuel to the engine. Another one can be that your accessory switch can be loose going to the fuel pump. I think its your ground though. Good luck! Hope this helps.
Have a nice day. -Steve
