My truck will only idle what to do? Do injectors plug? This truck has been sitting for at least 3 years. I drained the old gas and added new. The fuel pump has pressure.

Good chance that the fuel line/injectors/etc. have a varnish on them from the gas evaporating over time. Needs a good cleaning. Suggest something better than just pouring something in gas tank.

You very likely have clogged injectors from dried up fuel.

New battery. tries to but will not start Been sitting about 6 months. Thanks, Terry

Hi Terry/Lennis:
Old dude wisdom:
- Spark at the plugs &
- Fuel in the jugs.
My suggestions:
- Pull a plug or 2 and look for condition. Wet or fouled is no spark. Dry is no fuel. Connect the lead, hold the plug agaionst the head, and spin it over. Spark should be hot and blue.
- If you have spark, add gas and it should run. Sitting for 6 months might result in some carb/injector problems so I'd drain and then make sure I had fresh fuel. Adding some conditioner like SEAFOAM can't hurt.
- Once you get it going, it will like you if you take it for a decent ride.
Hope this helps.

89 f150 will start but after choke let's idle down it dies or if you even touch the gas. It had sat up for 5 years but the first time I got it started it drove for over an hour.

The damage is already done. Gasoline breaks down within 1 year. Drain and flush the old fuel out of the gas tank(s). Try adding Chevron Techron fuel injection cleaner to the replacement gas. That may work. However, you probably need to remove all the fuel injectors [if it's a fuel injected engine] and have them sent out to be professionally [ultrasonic] cleaned and tested. Fords are notorious for fuel injector problems. Also do a fuel system pressure test, as the bad gas may have damaged the electric fuel pump [located in the fuel tank(s). For a carbureted engine, you will need to have the carburetor overhauled or replaced with a rebuilt unit. NEVER let a vehicle sit unused for more than 6 months without first treating the gasoline. I always add a fuel stabilization product like Sta-Bil to the fuel, if the engine will not be run for at least 2 months or more. Adding these products after the fuel has gone bad [is already old] will not help. Then it's to late. Below is a link for Sta-Bil. I've used this product for over 20 years. It will save a LOT of grief, when storing vehicles or gas powered lawn equipment. See

92 vw passat 2.0 16v wont start.

I bet it's the gas. After some time the gas will no longer be volatile enough to start the car. Try draining all the fuel and putting in some fresh gas. Remember, when you try to start it again you'll need to get the new gas through the pump and lines before it will start. Also, check the condition of the injectors. Old gas can start to break down and build up a film that could be on your injectors (or clog your fuel filter- better check that too). Hope this helps.

89 300E, sitting for 2 years, getting fuel to fuel distributor, but not to injectors. How does the fuel distributor work? and how can I test it?

The fuel distributor is mostly mechanical. It does however require a few signals from a small computer for idle speed and mixture adjustment.. I would look close for broken/chewed wires. Does the air flow meter move freely? Thats the large plate right in the middle of the distributor.

Old '87 ranger been sitting in folks yard few years. fires up fine, but spits and sputters going down the road

Old fuel in tank, fuel filter clogged, plugged/clogged carb. or fuel injectors.

1. Drain fuel from tank and replace with new fuel with SeaFoam or Lucas

2. Repace fuel filter

3. With engine running at a high idle and air cleaner off, spray or pour carb/fuel injection cleaner into carb/fuel injectors.

If problems persist, check plug wires for cracks and/or breaks. Pull spark plugs checking for fouling.

94 Topaz sitting idle for 1.25 years. Tried to start and will kick over when use of fast start spray but will not stay on. Added 104 octane to fuel tank and 2 gallons new gas to idle gas in tank (approx...

As gasoline sits idle for that length of time, it turns into shellac.
this in turn plugs up the orifices in the carb, use a good quality carb cleaner, or fuel injector cleaner as the case maybe. follow the directions carefully. You may have to do this a couple of times.
Good Luck

2yahoo.comlet xj8l sit idle not starting it for 1 year i think gasoline varnished

There could be many reasons why the car won't start. If you are correct about the gas, and the injectors aren't clogged, Syphening out the old gas, adding fresh premium gas, and having a helper spray starting fluid in short bursts into the air filter intake while you turn the engine over should start the car. Good Luck.

Truck has set for two yrs. i would crank an go around the coner put insurance on it drove a few days later it started running sluggish it kills at stop it cranks right back i put a tune up changed plugs...

After sitting for 2 years, the gas has moisture/water and it's pretty much not gas anymore. It's like your car needs 87 octane and you are running on 80 octane, just enough to fire off but not strong enough to to keep a good idle/firing. I would drain all the gas out and use a higher octane gas for a half of tank just to clean the lines and injectors. Fill the tank up 1/2 with high octane and use a bottle of injector cleaner. This should clear up the sluggish problem. Also it's a good idea to change the oil and run an engine cleaner through. Drain a quart of oil, and pour in the engine cleaner. Let engine run for about 5 min for oil to heat up and circulate. Drain oil and change oil filter, put in new oil.

95 Mighty Max has been sitting for one year

Unfortunately if all you did was dilute the stale fuel you will have to remove the entire fuel system and clean/replace.Stale (old)fuel becomes acidic and works like an acid.If you remove the fuel system yourself avoid getting it on your skin as it burns(personal experience)At least its not an ignition fault as the engine wants to run with an independant supply of fuel(start fluid)Sorry cant supply cheap alternative but there you are Good luck and let me know how you go with it.
