VW Polo 1.2 02 Registration - Battery went dead, steering hard

This problen started Monday morning, the car was running fine on Sunday, I tried starting it Monday morning and it would not crank up. When I turned the ignition key, no noise no response from engine, instead the internal lights went dim. I tried pushing the car to give it a boost from another car, the steering was very hard to turn.

The engine started after the boost, however 10 mins later I tried to drive away and the engine cut out immediately when I slowly lifted my foot from the clutch.

Any ideas on what the problem is and how to resolve it.

Yes, a car will keep running with the battery disconnected, although that is not a good idea with all the sensitive electronic circuits on cars today. You can fry something expensive quickly. It will keep running because all power to run everything is supplied by the alternator, not the battery.
Have the battery charged up again, and see what happens. I don't know why it went dead, unless you have a charging problem. Does the battery/alternator light go off after the car is started?

When your car battery goes dead for no apparent reason, Occasionally something is drawing power that’s not of your doing. This is a parasitic draw, and it can cause the same result as leaving the headlights on. To read more on this type of battery drain please visit my blog

Your car probably has an aftermarker remote car starter module installed that you reset, by changing the battery. It has nothing to do with your actual car starter. You will need to shut down(valet) or uninstall that aftermarket remote car starter module to get it to stop trying to start your car with no keys in the ignition.

If its the electronic unit, check the main fuses near the battery, also check the wiring connectors at the powersteering pump for loose or corroded plugs. If alls ok,you will need a diagnostic machine to read out what trouble codes are in the units memory.good luck.

1992 VW Polo 1.3L Coupe: warning light mystery

Bought a very reputable diy service manual for the vehicle, and that plus a bit of thought and nous gave me the cure: no intrinsic problem other than loose relay connections. Went round with the wiring diagrams as guide checking all electrical connections in tight and relays fuses etc all good. Switched on and no problem any more.

By the way, vehicle is 1992 VW Polo - not Fox (which in UK is a variant of the Polo)
