Question about 1997 Ford Mustang Cobra

1 Answer

Running hot I have a newly rebuilt 72 302 motor. (1000 miles) this is stock in every way. With a new 3 row radiator, a new water pump, and new 160 deg thermostat, The motor warms up to about 155 deg, until I put it in gear and idle in my driveway for a while. then the temp slowly creeps up. I flushed the motor out but it didn't help much. When I take the car out for ride around town, it runs good, again until I idle. I can feel gurgling in the upper hose at the thermostat housing. The inside temp gauge shows the engine getting warm, but a digital thermometer in the radiator only shows about 175-180 deg. Whats going on here??!

You either have a head gasket problem or the
coolant system wants bleeding as air is being trapped in it .
Take out thermostat and try bleeding and driving without it in if ok then try the old one or a lower temp one

Let me know how you get on Ron.

2006 CHEVY COBALT OVERHEATING HAS NEW RADIATOR WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT

That is normal, it will not get hot without the thermostat. The water cools in the radiator and falls to the bottom and the bottom hose is cold. This is what cools the engine and stops it from overheating.

My trooper keeps over heating, I have changed the fan clutch, the radiator, the radiator cap. I have even taken the thermostat out. and it still runs hot. no crack in the block, could the heater core be...

The heater core being clogged would affect whether the interior gets hot air when set to hot temperature.

The heater core is like a very small radiator that wouldn't affect the temperature of the engine very much.

May I ask how hot it gets? Engines can get to 220 deg. F or 230 deg. F and still be considered to be running in a normal temperature range.

I`m positive you have a bad head gasket.I just did one for a friend of mine that had the same problem on his Buick Rondevous.Same motor. These are good motors but they have a tendency to blow the head gaskets. It is usually the back one for the #1 cylinder.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Okay sounds like you have a clog within the system, first of all, drain the whole cooling system, run clean water thought the top of the radiator, look to see when the water comes out nice clear, replace the lower hose if you have a petcock close that, refill the top of the radiator, until it is full, start the engine, with engine running turn your heater, let the car warm a little, then reopen the petcock or loosen the lower hose and let the water draw out a little until is pouring out nice and fast, then re-close the petcock and stop the engine.
try and get 40% of the water out, and replace it with 50/50 antifreeze fill to the right point of the cars specs.

Runs cool for about 15 miles then it gets hot(220) so i turn it off to let it cool about a half gallon of water is gone

220 to 230 deg. F is actually normal for the 1998 Cadillac Deville. If it goes to 250 deg. F or even 260 deg. F it goes into a limp mode where fresh air is pumped into 1/2 of the cylinders to preserve the engine up to 40 mi. of travel (in the case that a radiator fan isn't working or coolant has completely leaked out of the system).

If a half gallon of water is gone in the system and you keep losing it, there is a leak in the system say in the water pump o-ring or the radiator, or a hose.

did you use pure antifreeze if so remove it all and add a 50/50 mixture because antifreeze will not heat up good if its pure. needs water to allow good heat.

FILL RAD AND BOTTLE, LEAVE CAP OF AND WATCH WHEN ENGINE IT RUNNING , IF LEVEL DROPS WHEN MOTOR REVS PUMP OK, IF NO CLEAR MOVEMENT PUMP FAULTY, IF BLOWS WATER OUT, POSSIBLE HEAD GASKET OR CRACKED BLOCK/HEAD, YOU CAN DO THIS WHEN COLD,
ALSO CHECK THERMOSTAT IS NOT UPSIDE DOWN AND ALL HOSES CONNECTED ON REBUILD ON CORRECTLY
