Starts up and makes a terrible noise coming from the transmission. Will not shift into drive or reverse, but neutral and park work. Changed out the Filter and fluid and still nothing.

Look for a re-built replacement tranny. probably cheaper than having yours re-built. also, could be problem with electronics. won't be cheap, either way! get a couple estimates- from shops you trust-ask your friends for recommendations! depending on mileage, and other 'little problems', you may want to consider a newer used vehicle. i know (believe me!) times are tough- but a car that won't go is useless! if you can get it fixed for a reasonable price, and it's otherwise in good condition, get it fixed! make sure you maintain it (oil change, fluid checks, brake replacements, timing belt replacements, etc.) then repairing or replacing the tranny may make financial sense. do the math!
good luck!

Sounds like you have either got pump troubles Forward and reverse But could also be the Bands are worn out,,but both to go togeather is most unlikely unless you have been foot on throttle and foot on brake ...
Was the oil in trans when you drained it dark RED or even Black if so then the bands are burnt out you will do the same thing if you TOWED THE CAR AT MORE than 6 MPH for more than 1mile as it reverses the pump flow and the bands burn out

1998 land rover discovery transmission makes loud banging noise when shifting from pari to drive?

Tons of possibilities here (transmission, differential, motor mounts, transmission mounts....), so I'll ask some debug questions to help narrow it down. Does it make the noise when shifting into reverse? Also, does it make the noise only when shifting from park, or also when shifting from neutral (into drive or into reverse)? Did the noise start as an occasional, softer noise and get worse over time, or did it start suddenly? Does the vehicle lurch at the same time as the noise? What happens when you go from Reverse to Drive, or vice versa? Has any work been done recently (brakes, tires, alignment, suspension, transmission)?

Sounds like something broke inside the box. Take it to a transmission repairer.

98 Jeep Wrangler will shift when off but not while running makes grinding noise.

There is something wrong with the clutch. Make sure that there is enough clutch fluid in it. For some reason the clutch isn't disengaging like it should, so you are grinding the gears in your transmission, making that awful noise. You want to get it looked at before you ruin your transmission by stripping the gears.

Try checking the flywheel, usually if there is alot of noise from the transmission it is not the actual transmission. This can happen due to wear on the flywheel, or just the bolts simply coming loose. If after you check it you can't find the problem let me know and I will do my best to help.

Have the transmission repaired or replaced. The shift arm that shifts the gears is probably broken. That is why you cannot switch gears and is making that noise.

It sounds as though you are definitely having a transmission issue as well as possibly other drive line problems. You should have the vehicle inspected by a professional as soon as possible; because this could potentially be a major safety issue as well as causing further significant damage to you vehicle.

1990 Ford Thunderbird won't start

I take it as the car starts but it won't function well in drive and disables you from operating it.

Check the drive shaft as well as your torque converter and universal joints for alignment before you assume it's the transmission.

See from the torque { turning } of the parts to get the gearing to move the car. Any one of those could make horrible noises if they're not in proper alignment.

They work in close / direct conjunction with your cars transmission that all play vital and parts in allowing you to put it in gear to drive it.
