Question about 2008 BMW 528i Sedan

1 Answer

I have a 1997 BMW 528i. A few months ago my temp gauge went into the red so I took it to a mechanic and they claimed the t-stat was stuck, so they replaced it. Today, while I was driving the temp gauge started to fluctuate between middle and 3/4, is there a reason this is happening? Should I be overly concerned, or should I wait until the temp gauge goes all the way into the red? Thanx.

Firstly, check coolant, add to required level. a fluctuant temp gauge usually means there is a migrating air pocket in the system somewhere. the question is, is this a new air pocket due to currently leaking coolant or is it a pocket leftover from the t-stat replace way back when that was never completely bled out? if the coolant already seems at the required level, then the system needs to be bled again. if this does not solve it, then i would again suspect the t-stat

It sounds like the water pump is not working. Google your make and model with the words 'water pump repair' after it, if you want to try repair yourself. Otherwise take it to a mechanic you know and trust

is the cooling fan cutting in ? run the engine whilst stationary with the hood up , give it a little gas 2000revs and wait for the temp gauge to rise ,the cooling fan should be heard cutting in , and off again once cooled the engine temp down ,this may take 10-15 mins but you have to be sure the fan is cutting in or you may cook the engine

I have a BMW 528i 1997. Last night, the battery light came on, followed by the traction control light, then the ABS, and finally the brake light. It went on for a few minutes then the dashboard started...

I had a BMW 540i 2000 and that happen to me, my advice is to get the battery out of the car and recharge it. It would be advisable to have it check for malfunctioning. If it is ok, put it back on and the car will start. If not good, put a new battery, the car will start and all the lights will work in order.

Probably you could loos your radio set up and clock set up if you took too much time in the replacement of the battery, don't worry, reset the clock and the radio stations.

My check engine light is on, and today my temperature gauge stopped working and we have replaced the engine coolant sensor and the connector and temperature gauge still not working. PLEASE HELP

Could be the thermostat. I know nothing about cars but I noticed my 2000 Grand Prix temp gauge was not going to the normal level. My wife drives this car so I didn't notice it for a month or so. Eventually the Engine light came on. Took it to Autozone and the code came back as P0180... (1) low coolant (2) bad thermostat (3) enginge fuel temp sensor. They used a code reader that was about the size of an Ipod nano.

Coolant was okay, so took it to my mechanic. His netbook sized computer showed it was the Thermostat. He reset the codes and the temp guage went back to normal. Was short on $40 for the fix at the time, so I parked the car and promised to bring it back in 3 days. Went out and checked the car a day later at 25 degrees outside without starting the car... gauge still sitting at the normal level. No question it's the thermostat. That car will not be driven again until T.stat is fixed in 2 days.

Hi,
I had the same problem with my 1997 528i also. After doing a little research and talking to some mechanics that told me to replace the neutral safety switch located on the side of the transmission. I got the switch from BMW dealer and it cost around $300. After installing it the transmission shifted like new.

my 528i does, or did the same thing. Overheating is bad for those aluminum cylinder heads. 1st, replace the coolant. Then check to see if the electric cooling fans work, or cycle on, they most certainly would have to cycle on when the temp gauge is in the red zone.
1st thing most people do is replace the thermostat. However, if the temp goes from overheating to not overheating in less than a minute, the thermostat is working. The key thing to look for is why did it get to the red zone in the first place.
