Brakes mush to the floor at times. Some times great sometimes very mushy. Worst at lower speeds. Could it be Anti-lock

Check your brake fluid level. The mushy brake feeling is caused from insufficient pressure in the braking system. Possible causes: Air in the system, Leaks, worn faulty master brake cylinder, faulty ABS system, worn/faulty brake calipers or shoes. Hopefully this helps

May be air in the brake lines.
Bleed the brakes. Most brake shops do a lousy job. If you have it done make sure they test drive the car before you pay. If the brakes are still mushy, take it back and make them do it right or get your money back (all of it).
Very difficult to do by yourself, you will need an assistant if you haven't done it before.
Yes, there are one-man bleeders, not for first-timers.

your rear brakes are shot as they are the tightest
the fronts should grab hard when you press very hard
if they are mushy you need brakes bad
you should fell very comfortable that you have great brakes.

Why is the break sometimes high and sometimes low


not sure if you mean while driving or when parked with the ignition off but here are a couple reasons on why the brake pedal may be high and low at different times. If the vehicle is running the brake pedal will feel the same just about every time. If the car is off and you step on the brakes it will get harder and harder to push down since there is no vacuum assist. Another reason would be the brake pad thickness. New brakes the pedal will feel higher where as worn brake pads the pedal may feel lower. Another reason would be if you have air in the brake lines. this will make the pedal feel mushy and soft at first and firm up as you pump the brakes. Hope this helps.

Brakes have a mushy to floor response


usually an indicator of either a loss of pressure due to low fluid and/or air in the system (brake fluid leak) or extremely worn rear brakes (if drum brakes in rear). possible causes include master cylinder (internal fluid pressure leak), external fluid leaks (calipers, lines, wheel cylinders), rear drum brakes extremely worn down or severely out of adjustment. normally worn disc brakes may reduce pedal height SOME, but seldom "to floor". but the "mushy" quote combined with the "floor" quote suggests a hydrolic fluid pressure problem.

Break peddle to the floor no resistence behind it, and not stopping well, no noise.


First of all, don't drive with the brakes this way...
Sounds like you've lost the hydraulic pressure in the brake system.
Check the following:
1. Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir to make sure it's full of brake fluid. If not, top it off with the recommend brake fluid.
2. Try the brake pedal again, with the car running in PARK, press a few times and see if the pedal "firms up".
3. If it does, press and hold the brake pedal with the motor still running. Look to see if the pedal slowly sinks to the floor or if it's a bit "mushy" or feels ok.

If the pedal sinks to the floor, you've got a major leak in the brake system. This could be from one of the wheel cylinders, from the disk brake caliper piston, a damage brake hose, brake line, a faulty master cylinder, power brake booster.
The best way to check is a visual inspection. Look around each wheel- look for fluid leaks, for signs of fluid where you park, on the axles, under the hood near the brake fluid reservoir, etc.
If after the fluid is topped off, you get a mushy pedal, I would suggest getting the brakes "bled". Bleeding the brakes simply means getting all the air out of the brake lines. (Air compresses where brake fluid won't- if the pedal is mushy it's got air.)
If you've not done brake work before, I highly recommend taking it to a local mechanic to help you out. You really want to KNOW that your brakes are going to be there when you need them. So if in doubt have a mechanic check it out.

Front brakes feel mushy after being replaced


You have air in your break lines. The two ways you can solve this problem is have the breaks blead to get the air out of the lines, or you can take the top of the break reservoir and pump your breaks to the floor. DONOT DO THIS With the car moving. What this will do is force the air to the reservoir.

Anti lock brakes


Well this is very serious I hope you deal with it right away. You mentioned that sometimes the pedal was hard,do you mean that its all the way up and it doesnt feel like you have power brakes?? If so have you noticed any sounds like air escaping (swoosh sound when brakes applied)? Failure of the power booster causes pedal to become very hard and could possibly be your problem for hard pedal if I understood you correctly. check to make sure that vacuum to the booster is conected properly and hose not kinked..Now for the solution for the pedal fading to the floor... You either have air in your brake system, A bypassing master cylinder , or a hydraulic leak...Were your brakes serviced recently?? if so try bleeding your brake system first...That would be the first step if still the problem persist I would isolate exactly where the problem was coming from.. To do this you would start at the passenger rear wheel and line clamp the brake hose to make that part of your brake sytem inoperable...when clamped try your brakes and note if brakes improved or had know affect on system (when testing obviously im not suggesting you drive to determine results of test procedure)repeat test for each wheel you have isolated the problem when brakes feel normal with one wheel clamped,which ever it may be.. This isnt as hard as it might soun and if you are confused at all dont hesitate to ask questions... Remember the only dumb question is the one you fail to ask I would hate for you to get into an accident ... Good luck!!!
