Headlights out sportage 02

Well you first need to figure out if it is a problem with the alternator or the electrical system.
The alternator should be able to handle the power used by the headlights.
There could be a short in the switch but I would want to know the condition of the alternator first.

The circuit load is much higher with the HID lights, you need to rewire the headlights to a large gauge wire.

I have a 2001 xterra with one headlight that is not working, i have deteremined that there is a short somewhere in the line but not where i can get to it, I want to rewire it to the module on the other...

A short will blow fuses, you don't mention that. there is no "module". there is the headlamp switch and its directly wired to the headlamps. which headlight? hi and/or low beam? Low beam power is RED, for left, RED/BLACK for right, check for voltage on the black wire, there shouldn't be any. hi beams and low beams are on 2 different fuses.

I want to rewire the headlights via the ignition so that the headlights come on only when the car is on. My wife keeps on forgetting to turn off the headlights and the car is DEAD when she returns in the...

There is supposed to be a warning chime on the car. Is that not working? To rewire the lights to Run, you would have to access the bottom of the engine compartment fuse panel and move the headlight relay wire and 20 amp fuse #42 from the hot row to a blank spot in the run row. Sorry, but I don't have a diagram of the fuse box, so I can't give you precise instructions. The wiring diagram is pasted below.

Daytime runnning lights mean that the headlights are on in the daytime. On my 2005 MAlibu I can turn these of by truning the headlight swithc from auto to off.

check fuses or headlight relay(relay can stick) try tapping relay and see if lights come on or bypass relay . Next check for a broken , damaged, or grounding wire.

When i put my brights on my headlights go out

Replace your headlights. Your brights are no longer working. There are 2 sets of lights in each headlight. One set for your dims and one set for your brights. It is time to replace the lights.
