My car makes a rattling noises when i drive over bumps or bumpy roads like there is something loose under the car. It also makes a humming noise while the engine is on and gets louder when the ac is on......It just sounds really raggedy when I've only had it for 3 years with no accidents.......

look at the front lower engine mount. I had similar noise which has been driving me nuts, thought may be thesway bar links, put it on friends hoist and saw that the front engine mount (mounted to bottom of lower radiator support) was cracked and the rubber bushing inside very worn with pieces missing. odd thing is that reving, or putting into gear never caused it to make a noise, just certain bumps. I ordered part from Autozone, hopefully it gets here before the holiday week end is over. Good luck
the rattling is most likley a heat sheild that is loose,I see this mostly every day. get some self tapping screws and secure the sheild back in it's place . Don't remove the heat sheild it's there for a reason.
we had a similar problem last year . When we took it for MOT it was found to have broken rear suspension spring. rattle noise stopped once it was replaced. This year MOT same problem with spring on other side of car!!!
they are know for control arm bushing going bad , if u do it ur self its not a bad job , the bushing is about 25$ at the dealership and only about 4 bolts to take out , the worst part is to press in and out the bushing , but i did it with a hammer before without damaging the bushing , could also be sway links , witch are also easy to chage just check see if they loose if they are replace them ,
its probably your bump stops. the vw ones are very soft. i bought ford escort (the shape after the xr3) ones and cut them a little down to fit. i think the noise is either your shock touching or the sound of the tire scraping the body of the car. hope this helps.
