Have the tranny flushed and new fluid put in, and a new filter.

Things are getting gunked up and sticky in there, the car is 18 years old now.

If defrost is on that means AC cycles to remove humidity. Does this also occur when ac is running set at very near outside temp so it cycles? Could be the throttle positioning sensor (TPS) acting up.

Erratic gear change of automatic mazda 323, despite new ATF. Sometimes a heavy knocking sound when stopping.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Pretty much a torque converter issue. If the torque converter is faulty the car tends to shift unusually. Have the torque converter replaced and a smooth drive and shifting will be noticeable.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I can start my 1998 mazda b2500 pickup truck but it will not shift into gear

The truck must be a standard trans? If you can shift it with the motor not running, but not with it running, then most likely the clutch master cyl must be low on brake fluid. It must have a leak. Sometimes you can add brake fluid, then pump the clutch pedal slowly and you might be ok. But you will need to get it repaired.

I have a 2000 metro the trans shifts hard when you first start up from 2nd to 3rd. But after that it seams not to shift down from 3rd no matter how many times you spot and go again.

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST.
Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS.
Thank you for using fixya and keep us posted.

1996 Volvo 960 has shifting problem. Took to Trans shop and they think something is wrong with motor. When shifting from 1 to 2 it seems like the tranny is slipping or dropping down then back up quick...

Check the catalytic converter. You can do this by banging on it and listen for a rattle. Sometimes, the inside gets melted into a little ball and blocks the exhaust from getting out on acceleration. This will cause a serious loss of power and feel like a trans malfunction.

It will hang at high idle for a second before finally returning

there is a damper on the carburettor that can be adjusted to allowe the return a little quicker. this will be a bell looking item right near the accelerator link and a possible vacuum hose attatched to it. you should be able to adjust it up and down.

1997 Mazda dies when warm - runs smooth when cool

possibly a bad module------cracked---or???? In any case you may get expansion as engine compartment warms up----module shuts you down. Sometimes really hard to diagnose and just putting in a new module is "spendy"----especially if it turns out not to solve the problem!

2005 Mazda 3 idles rough at stop light and sometimes dies

The problem is a faulty solenoid in the vapor recovery system. The solenoid is sticking open and allowing fumes from expansion of fuel in the fuel tank to enter the air intake and smother the engine. This is how the Mazda service tech explained it to me. It is a known problem on the Mazda 3 in various trims which Mazda refuses to acknowledge. Usually the check engine light comes on and the engine diag code reads mass airflow sensor, which is incorrect. I dealt with this for 6 months on my wife's 2005 Mazda 3i before the dealership figured it out. My cousin bought a 2007 Mazda Speed 3 which developed the same problem after a few months and was cured by the same fix.
