Forget about the knock sensor.Change ECT/engine coolant temperature/sensor and everything will be OK.Because I do not know the engine code I can.t give you instruction for it.Come back with engine code and I.ll give you step by step instruction.

My engine has a knocking sound

i'm sorry! does the engine dipstick for the oil,is it full? has it been run low on oil lately? is the knocking sound like a real hard knocking, thumping with like deep base sound?if so,do not start it again. you may have a bad crankshaft bearing,or a bad crank, broken crank. if it's a tapping sound, that's different. it could be low oil pressure, just like the lower knocking,it may be bad oil pump.my advice is this, lower knock from oil pan where you drain the oil,do not start! upper,on top of the engine, just change oil 1st add a fram oil filter,if in cold weather recommend 5w30weight oil,in summer,30weight castrol with fram oil filter.is your oil light on? if not, then it'not low on oil,but CHECK your oil on dipstick, just to be sure thank you for choosing fixya.com

I have a 2000 mercury villager runs fine when first started in the morning but after several miles stats bucking and knocking worse when you try to excelorate bogs down real bad, could this be the knock...

do not change the knock sensor.

sounds like cam sensor in distributor is going. works cold fine, then as engine warms upo it starts going. is tach needle jumping too?

Buy reman rich porter on ebay for $200. sensor inside is not serviceable. common issue on 99-00.

Engine knocks on cold startup

Sorry for this, but usually if the engine knocks on cold start then goes away shortly, it's a sign of a rod bearing. This is just one explanation but in any case it needs checked QUICKLY! This isn't a normal sound and can only lead to bad things if not fixed.

Engine knock

The idle issue is normal. The idle is controlled by the ECU. There are no adjustments for the idle. Regarding the knocking noise, that could be several things, and I am hesitant to comment without hearing it. Take it to a Toyota Dealer & have a tech listen to it. We are very good at identifying noises on the service drive.
