Question about 1990 Ford Econoline

1990 ford econoline 5.0 v8 would not start. cleaned battery cables and terminals, jumped it, got it to start but it makes a loud clunk clunk clunk noise after a few seconds, the check engine light comes on and it dies out soon after? what is the problem?

Make sure the battery is good, then clean the battery posts and cable ends, and make sure the negative ground from the battery to the engines block is clean and secure.

Charge your battery, clean your terminals and see what happens. If you don't have a charger, clean the terminals and try jumping it again. Make sure you have quality jumper cables.

have you had the battery tested this could be the problem.if it was the charging system you wouldn`t be able to drive the car very far or at all as it would die from not charging from a jump start.you could have bad cable connections for the battery at the terminals and were the cables attach to the motor.just follow the ground wire from the battery down to were it fastens to the motor.pull on the cable as sometimes the cables go bad inside the insulation and can`t be seen.if the cable is bad internally then it will feel soft and move were the break is.do the same with the positive cable.check the connections and how clean the surface is were the cables attach.

1988 FORD E350 5.8 LITER V8 ECONOLINE WILL NOT START. CHANGED COIL AND TESTED PLUGS, AND FUEL PUMP. ALL TESTED GOOD. SOUNDS LIKE IT WANTS TO CATCH BUT WONT. WHAT CAN I DO?


The timing of the spark is important, and the timing can either be advanced or retarded
it wants to start but couldn`t because it sparks in wrong time

1987 Ford Econoline motorhome, sometimes key turns and nothing happens but starts fine with jump leads, keep on turning the key and eventually it will start. Can anyone shed any light please


Sure, CLEAN your battery cables - ESPECIALLY the bottoms. The bottoms are exposed to grease, road grime and when covered in "gunk" causes resistance. When you jump start or hit key multiple times, cables heat up and expand making better contact. Advise - clean ALL cable ends

I pulled my van into a friends house yesterday, turned off the engine and then lost power to everywhere. Nothing works anymore and of course won't start up


First off check the fuses under the dash. And make sure battery terminal connections are tight and clean.Check for proper tension (roughly 1/2 inch of deflection) on Alternator belt and that belt is present.Sounds like there is a alternator issue.Did your battery light come on while driving? Have a friend jump start you (follow safe jumpstart procedures or you could damage your friends car or yours ie:Ignition key off,Postive cable goes on first when attaching cables,negative cable comes off first when discconnecting cables. Let charge for 15 min or so before trying to start your vehicle ) If it starts look for a battery light on the dash. If no battery light is on then alternator is probably ok and battery is bad (take it out and have it tested at your local autoparts store). If the light is on then you have an alternator problem.To confirm alternator problem check output voltage across battery terminals. Should be min 13.5-14.5 no more than 14.5 If you have to replace the Alternator make sure battery is good and has a full charge and negative batt. cable is disconnected,if not you could potentially ruin you r new alternator

Your problem is likely a bad battery and/or corrosion on the battery terminals. Remove the cables from the battery terminals and clean them with a wire brush or other tool. NOTE: always remove the negative cable first and reconnect it last. Reconnect the cables and then try to start/jump the vehicle again. If that doesn't clear the problem, take the battery to your local auto parts store or supplier and have them check it. You will probably need a new one.

2000 FORD EXCURSION WITH 7.3 TURNS BUT WONT START


Since you said that ,".....IT STARTS IF I JUMP IT", that indicates that your batteries are not providing enough energy to turn the engine over quickly enough to get it started. You could have the batteries checked and go from there. It is also possible that the cable are not making sufficient contact with the battery cables. First, disconnect battery cables and clean up the cable ends with some kind of over the counter acid neutralizer or make your own with sodium bicarbonate and water. Brush the terminals and cable with a wire battery brush and reconnect cables to battery terminals. Be sure to connect positive (red) terminals first and then the negatives (black) to minimize sparking. If the engine still does not start, then, I would just replace both batteries with two new INTERSTATE batteries. They are a little pricey, but they make high quality batteries. 97 F-250 Won't start.


On the fender well near the battery is the starter relay using a wrench or screwdriver try jumping the two large terminals and see if it starts if it still does not make sure that where the ground cable attaches to the motor is tight, if it is even 1/2 turn lose could cause no start problem.
