Question about 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

3 Answers

Whenever I go above 60 mph on the highway my steering wheel shakes or vibrates. This has happened before and I had to get my rotors turned. Could it be that I need new rotors? If so, what's the best brand of rotors to get? I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt with about 29,000 miles.

You have a various amount of brand names to get with various prices. I would probably go with Wagner for your car, but it is more expensive. some people cut the rotor, but I don't recommend it.

Check the air pressure, condition & balance of your front tires.balance can change as tires wear.at 29K you shouldn't have any issues with front end component wear, barring any ''incidents''

Rotors will only cause a shake when braking. Your problem is more than likely out of balance tires.

The best brake components are usually the ones that cost the most.

Vibration from about 40-60 mph is usually attributed to wheel balancing, but the onset when you hit a bump seems to indicate play in the steering linkages (tie rods etc) or suspension members and stabiliser bar rubbers but you had that all checked out, that brings us back to the wheel balancing.

1. out of balance tire because it sounds speed spacific.
2. worst of all! Loose lug nuts or possibly loose spindle nut. (you will need to lift the wheel off the ground to tell)
3. worn linkages i.e. ball joints, steering linkage, anything that would allow play in the front wheels.

Brakes all 4 lock up steering wheel shakes above

OK, when the ABS module is unplugged, the same results. That tells me that the ABS system is not working properly.
Did they look into the master cylinder and other abs related components?
Any ABS codes on it?

If steering wheel shakes above 50 mph that's likely to be the tires on it, rather than a brake problem.

Have tires balanced and rotated and inspected for out of roundness that might cause vibration above 50 mph.

Steering wheel is shaking when I brake

The problem lies in the front rotors. If the steering wheel is shaking without braking, then we need to break this up. If it's low speed(1-15 mph) then you have a tire that is coming apart. Highway speeds, you need the wheels balanced. If it's only while braking then you need to have the brakes inspected. If pad replacemnet is required, go for it. When they address the rotors, DO NOT TURN THEM ON A CONVENTIONAL LATHE. Honda REQUIRES them to be either turned on the vehicle(on the car lathe) or replaced. Then it comes down to quality. Always replace with the higher quality parts on these. If you do not, the problem will occur again, and the sme is true if you turn the rotors off of the car.

Car shaking and vibrating at 55 mph. and does it again at 65-70.

Hi:
Since your BMW 540 series is a rear wheel drive car, a common cause of that sort of vibration is often the U joints on your drive shaft. The vibration often only shows up and certain speeds.

It isn't a particularly expensive repair, but is something to have checked out!

Front End shaking

Most likely with this problem is the front tires. The tires maybe " out of balance " or " out of round " causing the vibration at certain speeds.
