Question about 1996 Land Rover Discovery

Open Question

2001 disco II overheating

My Disco has started to overheat and the overflow tank sprays/bubbles over and onto the manifolds to cause heavy steam.

Filled with water yesterday and it emptied again today.
Today was the first time that the temp guage went to red.

Spent $3000 6 months ago to replace head gaskets... bringing to same shop top see if they screwed up,

What to do...

Land rover disco overheated(coolant hose broke on long trip) starts but knocks and has fluid leaking from top of radiator on battery side.

I can't say without looking at it, but probably yes.
If the engine had enough force in the cooling system to blow the hose, and the engine knocks, and it quits running its probably toast.
You would need to run a compression test to check the cylinders and run the engine with the radiator cap off to see how long it would take to get hot again, and to check for exhaust fumes in the cooling system.

Overheating

I would recommend that you bleed all air out of the cooling system. The bleeder valve is located on top of the engine. Once engine starts to overheat or when you can hear bubbling back into the overflow bottle, turn car off and open bleeder valve. If you see bubbling you have air in your system. Bleed the system a couple of times and see if this helps.A heat sensor sending unit which controls activation of the electric fan could also have failed. But is the heat sensor is properly working then check the radiator cap is it properly fitted or got loose. If its loose it will release the pressure and car will overheat. But if the radiator cap is properly closed. Then its time to check the HEAD GASKET.As you have mostly replaced all the possible faults for overheating and if other mentioned possibilities are checked OK.Then its time to check and replace head gasket. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Only if the engine is running, will the loose belt cause a noise in the engine,if it is a grinding noise, the starter drive, may be sliding into the flywheel.

My v reg disco has been standing for about a month i recarged the battery and it starts but cuts out after a couple of seconds its petrol/lpg

What's a disco? Wow! I'm not a certified mechanic, but try disconnecting the air intake hose and having a helper start you car. Soon as it starts spray a dash of AUTO starters fluid (CARB CLEANER) into the intake manifold. Moisture may have accumilated in fuel line. Sometimes when an altinator is going it might act similarlry, but try the low to no cost options first. See if all of your lines are connected tightly. Check the fuses. a blown fuel pump fuse would give your results. Look at the fuel filler hole for moisture as a slight check for tank moisture.
