There is a sprung idler wheel that keeps the tension on the belt, if you look at it you will see a hexagon or square that you fit a wrench on and turn against the spring to loosen the belt (it saves a lot of time and stress if you get someone to hold the tension while you change the alternator as the serpentine belts can be trying to re-thread, note the belt run or take a photo to make is easy if you do remove it)

How to change altenator belt

loosen the bolts on the alternator. One is a pivot point the other slides along the mounting bracket to vary the tension on the belt.

Swing the alternator inward to loosen.
Remove the belt.
Install the new one.
Pull the alternator out to tighten the belt.
Hold in place and tighten the tension bolt.
Tighten the pivot bolt.

Correct belt tension: at the mid point on the belt along the longest run press down. It should move about a quarter of an inch of so.

Change moter alt belt keeps breaking

Hi the altenator belt? if it keeps snapping then your altenator is rather starting to seize up or its not fitted correctly, normally if its squeking its to loose.

Spin the altenator by hand and see what it sounds like, if its hard to turn or noisey that the fault.

hope this helps.

How do I remove alternator on a 2002 suburban

Disconnect neg battery cable, then unplug wire harness on altenator. Then remove bolts to remove. When putting back on, put altenator on first, then belt. There will be a tensioner pulley that you can pry down or pull up with breaker bar and socket to get belt back on. Try to keep belt in place as much as possible with altenator out so you won't loose track of the routing.

Altenator replacement

its not hard to replace an alternator,,,there are 2 bolts that hold it in place that you have to take out.make sure you take the pos battery cable loose so you dont short anything out , once you remove the bolts he alternator will move freely there is a wiring harness hooked to the back of it that you have to take loose and then you can pull the alternator off the try.you put it back the same way you took the old one off and when you go to tighten the belt you need a prybar to apply tension against the alternator and then as you keep that tension on therer you tighten the golts to keep the belt tight. thats about all there is to it
