Question about 2003 Chrysler 300M

2 Answers

I have a 2002 chrysler 300. I just had a water pump & timing belt replaced as well as an oil change and 02 sensor replaced (diagnostic pointed to this). After all the work my car would run rough as if it were running out of gas on an idle or low rpm. I took it to a dealership and they said i needed an 02 sensor that was NOT after market, a Mopar one which I had them install as a software upgrade. It lasted for 34 miles and now the engine light is back on again! Help! Single mom who has just sunk 1400.00 into her car with 0nly 80K miles. Cant afford a trial and error maintenance plan! Why is the same 02 sensor going off again?

What trouble code are you getting? Many times the software upgrades don't work. Are they saying there is no part to replace only the software upgrade?

There is a possiblity another 02 sensor went. This is not a trial and error thing. Stuff happens. I suspect that the timing belt was replaced without lining up the cam gears because they either did not have the tool to hold them while the old belt was off or who knows. The dealer entered the game later not knowing you had other work done or you may have explained to the service writer who knows less about cars than you do. The dealer techs should look for cam data if possible with a scan tool before they assume 02 alone and address your current check light warning. Cam timing will give you all the drivability systems you mentioned. Don't for get a clogged gas filter.

I understand your frustration. O2 sensors are the most oversold car parts on the market. The reason for this is there is never a diagnosis done to find why the sensor went bad. Sensors normally show check engine when the fluctuation of fuel air mixture is beyond the computers pre-set range the computer wants to read. I would check the plug wires, plugs or coil pack. This would cause too much gas to be burned setting off the sensor. Also if one of your fuel injectors is bad, there may not be enough fuel in the mixture. Also would set the light off. In reality there are 100s of things that could make the O2 sensor send a trouble code. I hope this helps you better understand what may be happening with your vehicle.

Slight metal shavings are in oil & minor oil sludge in 2001 chrysler sebring v6 2.7 engine & has random starting failure. Is it worth it to pay high price to replace water pump and timing kit?

i would say the metal is from the bearings. a timing chain would be a waste of effort at this point. if you get a used engine with 70000 miles or more, i would replace the water pump and probly the timing chain.if you get later model engine the flywheel and camshaft gear will have to be changed or it wont run.

Why are you asking that question?

I have a 99 chrysler 300m that does not start, it sounds like it's out of gas but there is gas in there.. The diagnostic says the cam & the crankshaft sensors are bad but they have been replaced 2...

I am not saying that this is your problem for sure, but have you had your water pump and timing belt replaced lately?? I had the same car and it would crank and crank but would not start. I replaced both my cam and crank sensors also. Eventually I tore into it and found out that my timing belt had broke.

What happened to mine is the water pump (inside the timing cover powered by the timing belt) leaked and the coolant messed up my timing belt and the timing belt finally snapped.

I replaced water pump and timing belt and luckly the car did not have any bent valves. Just to help out I would not try and crank the car anymore until you know for sure that your timing belt is intact. If it is bad and you go in to replace it I would do the water pump while you are in there. It will save you trouble and is a really easy job.

Good luck and I hope the best for you!!

Timing belt should water pump be changed as well?

If it's a ES300 yes replace water pump, due to timing belt drives water pump, if it's a GS300 no need to replace water pump, not driven by timing belt.

Want to know if it is a timing belt or timing chain that is required for a 2002 chrysler voyager

It's a belt. Cost is about 800 to replace belt, water pump and front main seal. You'll want to have the water pump and front main seal done while they r in there, will save headache later. Timing belt runs the water pump so if 1 goes, then so does the other.

Check your oil dipstick for coolant, or a mucky substance. Your symptoms sound like a blown head gasket.

From under vehicle, follow exhaust down from engine, eventually you'll see a piece about 3-4" long sticking out side of the exhaust with wire(s) going to it.
