If it's fuel injected, check the fuel pump shut off switch,it could be in one of three places, right or left inside kick panel at the top,or near the floor on the right side, near the floor tunnel.Push the button and you will feel a click.

The engine computer must be working to get spark and fuel injector pulse. I would want to know if the computer has power and is functional. The computer grounds the EEC relay and the fuel pump relay as well as the injectors.

A guy just told me that there is a internal fuel pump and a external fuel pump on my 1988 ford ranger xlt 2.9 4x4. is this true?

In some applications, yes there is two.

On the 2.3L and the 2.9L engines to model year 1988 the electric fuel pump system used on these EFI engines consisted of two fuel pumps: a low pressure boost pump mounted in the fuel tank, and a high pressure fuel pump mounted on the frame rail.
The low pressure electric fuel pump is located in the fuel tank and is a part of the fuel gauge sending unit.

1988 ford ranger ( 4 cyl ) Fuel pump kicks on, motor starts and runs approx. 5 to10 min. and dies. Turn key back on and can't here fuel pump.

It sounds like your fuel pump is overheating. Once it gets too hot the bearings swell and the pump locks up. When it cools, they contract and the pump works again. It is also possible the fuel pump relay is having a thermal failure. You can determine this by hooking a voltmeter into the fuel pump supply wire and keep it where you can see it while it is running. If the voltage goes down and then the truck stalls, it would be the relay, if the voltage goes down after the truck stalls, it would be the fuel pump. Since the pump is only running when the engine is running, once the engine dies it'll turn off the fuel pump so it is important to pay attention to what happens first.

replace the oil sending switch on the motor. upon starting the engine this switch has a 3rd wire connected to the fuel pump
when oil pressure is running at its normarl psi the computer will shut that circuit off and then turn on the fuel pump relay

Replaced the fuel pump in 1988 ford f250 and the engine still seems to not be getting fuel

follow fuel lines from gas tank to engine are any lines crushed. next replace fuel filter. check to be sure fuel filter is installed in right direction. arrow on fuel filter should point toward engine. double check that fuel lines are connected properly, some fuel pumps have three fuel lines one for pressure , one for return and one vent line.last possible bad fuel pump from factory

Fuel pump wont pump

The electric fuel pump will have to much pressure for the carb, you need a pressure regulator to cut the pressure down to 5 psi. The reason the fuel pump won't stay running is because it gets its power from the oil pressure sensor by the distributor. Did you install this on the new engine and plug it in? The relay is what runs the pump for 5 seconds and shuts off.
