I installed brake pads that didnt have a sensor and my passat has the sensor hook up that i did not use...the problem is the brake light stays on and it flashes to check the pads. how do i get rid of that...

The light should have gone off when the computer reset itself after you've drove a certain amount of mileage. You will have to go to your local garage and have the light reset.

My 2005 vw passat sedan is consuming too much fuel.fuel filters have been changed. could it be a problem from the control board?

Mileage can be affected by a multitude of things. Your driving habits will be the largest contributing factor but if those havent changed I would suggest the following:

Air filter replacement (k&n will get you more mileage)
plugs, wires, ignition coil (basic tune up stuff)
make sure the air pressure in your tires is correct
Make sure your calipers arent dragging on your rotors, this is probably not the case as I have rarely seen all four calipers drag at the same time, but if some are dragging more than others than this will increase wear and tear on your brake system and significantly lower your mileage.

If there are no check engine lights showing then I wouldnt think you have any sensor problems, but your o2 sensor can case your mileage to go down if its bad, but this should trip a trouble code.

I would not trust the on board computer to calculate your mileage either, there are too many variables for it to measure your mileage accurately. I would put a known amount of fuel in the car and reset your pedometer, drive normally and calculate your mileage manually before doing any tuneup. This will give you your mileage as your cars computer may be out of whack.

I average 33 mpg in my 07 passat automatic (by reading the onboard computer) on the highway. In town i get 22-26 depending on how I drive it. The mileage on this computer will fluctuate wildly when going up hills and down hills, during acceleration and braking, its just not an accurate measure of your mileage more like a guestamation by the vehicle.

Reset service interval alarm on VW Passat-01?

This is a mileage interval light that trips every 3,000 to 5,000 miles that indicates an oil change is necessary. You do not need a special tool to change your oil, nor do you need to bring the car in to the dealer.
1. Sit in the driver's seat of the Passat and close all the doors.
2. Position the trip/odometer button to display the odometer mileage reading, then hold it down with the forefinger on your left hand.
3. Turn the ignition key to the "key-on/engine-off" position to turn on all the power options for the Passat without actually starting the engine. At this point, a service indicator light will display (in the form of a wrench).
4. Press the minute adjustment button on the clock (or turn the knob clockwise on European manufactured Passats) and release the trip/odometer button.
Good luck and thank you using Fixya
